okay, been dealing with this problem for quite a while, a very long while.  Ive got a 360 stroked to a 408, its toped with an edelbrock performer RPM intake and a holley 4160 600 cfm carb.  I can not for the life of me get this carb to function.  Thing idles at roughly 2500 rpms and if i open the choke more than 1/4 of the way, it dies out.  manual choke btw.  ive turned the idle screw out all the way, no change, turned it in all the way, no change, turned it all the way in, again no change. Ive had this carb rebuilt twice, once by me, a 2nd time by a local shop, nothing has changed.  im buying a new carb but Im just wondering what could be causing this issue.  BTW, its not the motor cause i did borrow a carb from a buddy of mine, though it was a edelbrock 750, it idled and ran fine so i know its my carb.

seems the choke isnt getting a feel for the engine temperature, but thats just a guess  :shruggy:  from what i've read about manual chokes, its kinda an ongoing adjustment until you find that sweet spot that works everytime.  or something you are adjusting isnt doing what its supposed to be

A 600 CFM carb on a 408 C.I. engine? Dump it, and get a Holley 750 DP...

Ordered one yesterday from summit, just curious now as to what the heck was causing it.  I checked for leaks, even went through with new gaskets, lines and vaccum hoses. even a new carb spacer, throttle cable and spring and choke cable, nothing

It sounds like the carb has an internal vacuum leak....probably defective from the get-go  :P
