At this point I think it is a case of a very dishonest person that is torn between selling his car or keeping it.
If he can deliver the car and bring the title holder with him I will give him cash, but I dont think I will persure picking it up anymore.

Having said that, he could have easily sensed how much you wanted the car & decided to hold out to see how badly you wanted it. Look at all the dealerships that get thousands over the sticker price because people are willing to part with their money so easily when emotions are involved. I would be completely done with the deal at this point & say no thanks, I'm not interested. There will be many other cars out there, lots without headaches, & probably one that you will like even more.

Im sure he did sence that I wanted it. I tried to play it cool which is why I made the intial offer of 200 bucks less than asking. That being said I have owned some nice cars over the years, but nothing gets the juices flowing like sitting in a car that takes you back to highschool (even though mine was a 93 z28). I think thats why I got so damn attached and put up with the the drama so long. This thread has been a nice therapy session for me LOL  :icon_smile_big:.

sounds like he doesn't want his parents to know he's selling the car.

The only thing I would do if I really wanted the car is talk to his parents... If he's working turn up and knock on the door and tell them the situation. If he happens to answer the door and he told you he was working you just caught him out... If those fail then I would walk away.

I agree. Seems to me he's trying to pull one over on his folks to me. I wouldn't doubt that the car is in their name and he's trying to sell it out from under them. If so that would put you right in the middle of a major cluster f*%$ that you want no part of.

People will do strange stuff when selling a car just to get more money. When I bought my Mustang, I knew it was exactly what I wanted but I wasn't set on buying it. I saw it on Craigslist on a Sunday and I emailed the owner (a kid not much older than me) asking some questions about it. We chatted for a few days and he answered all my questions. I called him on Tuesday and asked when I could go look at it. He said he was busy the next day (Wednesday) but was free Thursday night. I set up a time and told him I was very interested. On Wednesday during the day I called him and wanted to confirm Thursday night. He all of a sudden told me some guy came out to look at it (on Wednesday- when he told me he 'wasnt free') and verbally told him he would buy it. He told him he had wrecked his Mustang and was getting his money from the insurance company Thursday morning and would be out right away and he said he would pay the asking price of $2,500. I told him that was bullshit as I had set up a time for Thursday and said if he was free for the night I would be out right away to look at it and give a $100 deposit. He said he was so I went out, test drove it and since everything checked out, I gave him the deposit and we agreed on a final price of $2,300. He said he was not looking forward to telling the other guy it was sold. The next night I came back and gave him the rest of the money. To this day I still think the whole story about the other guy was BS since he took $200 less for the car from me than the other guy was going to pay for it....

Similar thing on a 69 Charger happened to me. I heard about this car through the grapevine that had sat there for a year or more but wasn't being advertised for sale. When I went to see it and asked him to take a deposit and give me until the next day to get the money he said "don't worry about it. The car's not going anywhere." Yet somehow "a guy just showed up out of the blue" and bought it before I could return.

I think you have put up with enough BS from this guy. There are other cars out there. Let this flake keep his. If he gets back to you tell him to meet you half way and see what he says. If you do go back for it double check the vin tag against the title and look very closely at the notary stamp and the sigs. Sounds way fishy to me.

Well we had bad snow yesterday, so last night I said I would give it one more try today since the snow was supposed to be done.
I told him I would call before I came around 9:30am. Go figure no answer again.
I sent a message that I was on my way and would be there at such n such time just to mess with him. At this point I had no intention of wasting my time to drive up there.
I got a reply about 20min later that he would need an additonal 500 bucks to part with the car today. Im not going to bother even replying.

There's a big surprise.   ::)

Don't even waste your time with this jackass. If he does get in touch with you again, tell him you'll give him $2000 less than the original asking price, he has to deliver it to you at your convenience, his parents not only have to tag along to sign & notarize it in front of you, but they have to do all the spring lawn maintenance in the yard & cook you a nice hot meal.

This is crazy. In the last hour I got three messages that he will now take the original amount. I finally replied saying that if he brings car to my house Monday I will take it. I think if he shows up I should offer 1k less.

ChgrSteve67

Sorry to hear the guy decided to jerk you around.
I don't think I would mess with him anymore either.

If he changes his mind tell him to knock off $500 and deliver the car.

bobs66440

This definitely sounds like a shady, screwed up deal. I think you're headed for a world of aggravation with this guy.

This is so strange. I think there is maybe a mental disorder with this guy. Not bashing disabled people either Im very serious. Nothing else makes sence.

So Saturday he says no problem he will drive the car to me on monday to make up for everything.
Sunday I send a message checking to see if title is nortorized and everything is ready. He assures me it good to go.

An hour later he sends a message that plates are expired on car and he dont want to drive it. After 20 minutes I give several ways to get the car here including a simple 30 day tag.

Then he remembers he needs to pick up a transmission for a friend at 10am and cant drive it, I say fine just meet me early in the am like 8am. Still no good he has to help pull the transmission they are replacing early in the am.

Im thinking to myself if your going to lie get a story line established. Dont spring the trans story 10minutes after the expired plates story.
He said if I can come pick it up its mine and title is ready to go he will make sure someone is there. At this point im just courious how far this can go.
So i just say if he wants to sell it i will be here with cash. just come after the transmission deal and I will be here.
Then another message that he just has to run to many errands today and might have to do some work later on. But if i can drive back up the car is mine.
I told him I am considering a few cars and just let me know asap if he can bring it out.
I think he has tried to call 3 times since I sent that message 5min ago.

I have no intention of driving back up, but still have that glimmer of hope that I can baite him into driving it to my house where I plan to look the car over and point out a few things I must have missed and offer him $500 less.
