What's the diameter of the air cleaner base on a Holley 770 Street Avenger?

Just curious how close my original Carter 2bbl air cleaner is going to come to fitting a Holley 770.

Looks like the aluminum versions have a 5.125" neck, according to the Holley air cleaner that fits it. http://www.holley.com/0-83770.asp I wonder if the regular Avenger is the same diameter? Most likely.

I have a stock air cleaner on my Holley 770, no problems.

Yea..but I think the stock 2bbl air cleaner has a smaller opening...  :shruggy:

bull

Assuming the 5.125" measurement is correct my air cleaner won't fit. I measured my air cleaner last night and it's 4 1/8" so if that's the case you're right, there's about an inch difference. I wonder how I can make it work?

I would scribe a line around the old air cleaner then jig saw it out. Use a base gasket & find the center then eyeball up the base plate. It may take a bit and if possible use a thin tip marker to trace first.
  Measure 10 times & cut 1 time.

or....find the stock base for a 68 & up AVS 4bbl carb...not the AFB style

bull

I'll have to look for one of those. :yesnod:

But, before I spend my money, I need to get back to the original question. Can anyone give me the diameter of the air cleaner base on a Holley 770 Street Avenger?

I just called Holley tech support and they confirmed that it's 5 1/8" so now I guess I need to find a stock 4bbl base that will work with my 2bbl silenced, single snorkle top.

A383Wing

2bbl single snorkel top will not flow enough air for a 4bbl...that's why all 4bbl tops were unsilenced or had dual snorkels.

I don't know of any factory single snorkel top ....  :shruggy:

A383Wing

yea..that's the top...thought you were looking for the bottom part...that is the top part for 2bbl cars

maybe I typed my response wrong....let me try again:

"I know of no 4bbl single snorkel tops for engines that was factory"

(I'm so drugged up right now I should not even be here......sorry, I'll shut up now)

bull

I am looking for a bottom, that was just an example so I could avoid going up into my attic to take a picture of my air cleaner.

Anyway, so you don't think my original single snorkel top on a 4bbl bottom would work? Not enough air flow?

A383Wing

I'm sure it would work OK with an older 625 cfm carter carb....but not sure if it will choke off a little with the 770 Holley...I'm sure someone here could explain it better than I can, but air has to get in in order to get out..if the inlet of the air cleaner is too small, then it will choke down the engine for breathing....kinda like you trying to get enough air after a 5 mile run and all you have to breathe through is a straw.

They do make a double snorkel style like the one you posted above....I might even have one..I'll look this weekend...send me an email as a reminder if ya want.

Another option is to cut off that snorkel and put it on another single style top to make it a double inlet

bull

Chrysler made a double snorkel style air cleaner that looks identical to the one I have.

Well, other than it's got two snorkels.

So unless the person looks at the VIN they are not going to know it is a 2bbl 383 if they can decifer the codes. I fail to see the hassle in this, grab an air cleaner for a HP 383 and move on.  If your running a Holley Street Avenger it can't be that tight of a pure stock resto and a factory style HP air cleaner should be just a fine.

What hassle? We're just having a conversation here. :nana: And FWIW I really don't care what some lookie-lou figures out after looking at my VIN or tag or whatever. I'm not asking these questions to retroactively satisfy some rubber-necking purist five years from now. If I didn't already own a 2bbl air cleaner it wouldn't be a topic but when possible I like to try to make it look like it once did and/or how I want it to look. But if I can't make it work I won't let it turn into a "hassle" if I can help it.

greenpigs

No hassle for me.

You should be in bed bull.

I am at work so I have a reason for being up this late.

Bull...have we come to the conclusion that you are going to need the bigger base and the double snorkel top now?

(carrying on with our conversation)

Uh, I guess. :shruggy: Or maybe I'll just get a new, reproduction unsilenced unit. But it seems like those are always chrome which I don't want. Maybe I'll get one like the one pictured above.

A383Wing

I like the snorkel ones better...but that's just me....do you have a single snorkel one now?

Yes. It looks just like the dual snorkel above except of course it's got one snorkel and no graphics. Maybe I'll man up and take a picture of it.

A383Wing

OK...maybe just find another single snorkel air cleaner and just rob the snorkel out of it and install it in yers...I think even the 318 snorkels are the same...double tops are gonna be hard to find...and pricey

I'll look this weekend and see what I have here...if anything
