how much should i pay to get my ly rods reconditioned? and whats max i can spin a ly rod with hyper aluminum piston becuase im building a 451 stroker looking for 500hp-550

FLG

Honnestly, for the price of reconditioning and with doing what you want to do I think it would be wiser/safer to just invest in new rods.

I think is was about $40 for the set plus SRP bolts $60, three years ago.

I used lighter weight JE pistons and will go occasionally to 6000 rpm on a street car.

my 440 still has the original LY rods with ARP bolts, swinging heavy old TRW pistons. I beat the crap out of it to 6500 plenty of times with no problems.

So far.

I'm smarter now...lighter pistons or better rods above 6000.

I agree ly rods are plenty strong, heck I'm using em in a rebuilt 440.

I'm sure they would be fine with the right prep work but I'm always one for over doing things a bit  :shruggy:

Mine are getting reconditioned right now - $20 each, for $160 total. Add in some extra money for new bolts.

From what I've seen, aftermarket rods start at about $400 and up for a set.

Reconditioning the rods leaves almost enough money on the table to pay for those hypereutectic pistons, which I'm also running.

As far as how fast you can spin them, I don't know . . . It seems like anything over 6,000 RPM on a regular basis, you might want to start having that discussion.

well i got the rods and forged crank for 100 bucks all in great condition with the crank already machined rods still had oil on them when they were pulled out and they were in good shape so i figured i would use them but i need to figured out what piston i neeed for under 300 bucks that can handle 100-200shot

jhowell34

440source got some forged rods that are under 300 but i havent heard anything about them

Challenger340

Back in the 80's
We used to spin ly rods, resized with ARP Bolts, over 7,000 rpm with a 1.34" Compression Distance Piston in 451 engines, and RELIABLY at that !
(remember here, the 451 Piston is a full 1 POUND lighter than the 440 Piston ! it's happy !)

That said,
These days, hard to argue with going out and BUYING a set of Eagle H-Beams ?

Personally, I would steer clear of PRICE as a factor to buying Rods ? WAIT until you can afford something decent.

Only wimps wear Bowties !

jhowell34

yea  but for first motor build i dont wanna go all out just build something fun and learn in the process thats y i dont wanna buy a bunch of new forged parts etc its a first build to learn on but what piston would i use

If you're going to spray anything close to a 200 shot of nitrous, I'm pretty sure that puts you well into the forged piston territory.

As for what one you need/want, that's beyond me. A good set of forged pistons for less than $300 might be tough to find.

jhowell34

yea im save i seee i need to spend 500 on pistons so thats what i gotta do
