Have you seen any significant performance increases using K&N filters?

I'm running one on my Dakota and I can't say I've noticed much difference. Other than believing their promises or running dyno tests how can a guy verify any HP increase?

I had one in my V10 and didn't notice much of anything either. We did install an ARE cold air intake on our diesel pickup which uses a larger cone type element and that did help some.

My truck was seeming to get tired about 3 months ago and I installed one. It seemed to work wonders, but I had to keep in mind that my truck was in need of a filter change real bad at the time, so who knows? of course you're going to see some improvement if you swap one in when your current filter is in bad shape, but I wonder how much of a difference it makes if you swap from a clean standard filter to a K&N filter?.. One thing I will say though, it DOES pay for itself after 2 to 3 filters replacements since it is fully serviceable and reusable...it's like reinstalling a free filter after a couple of years of use.

Any opinions to the claims that they can actually do more damage by letting too much crap though?

I've never used them but I've heard this claim multiple times now.

I put one in my Jeep and didn't notice much of anything, but to be fair that Jeep was a POS.

I put one in my Taurus SHO and the butt dyno did detect some increase.

I put one in my Charger, but the car doesn't run yet.

Did I help?  ;)

I think believing in promises or using a dyno is the only way to find out for sure.
K&N filters are too expensive for me. I have a bad habit of contantly tweakin' the carb.
One good backfire and the $40 K&N filter becomes as effective an air filter as an old pair of pantyhose.
Sixty-eights look great and the '69 is fine.

I have one in the Charger......cant say how much of an improvement it made.  I got it "just because" ;)

Did you put the K & N sticker in the window too? I hear that is what really helps performance.  ;)  :icon_smile_big:

The rice crowd has apparently noticed that too because they have them all over the place. Now if I could get sponsors to help me with restoration costs I'd probably advertise their products for them. ;)

Ghoste

I have one but I don't think I noticed anything seat of the pants.  I think it's one of those every little bit helps things.

Rocky

If they were crap, I think somebody would have spilled the beans by now just like all those "performance sparkplugs".

deathcharger71

my dad got a K&N cold air intake as well as a gibson cat-back exhaust system on his expedition and it did help, not a ton but it was noticable, my guess would be 15-20 hp. From what ive been told exhaust and intake work well together but not that great without each other.

GreenMachine

Here's an idea, run your can with your paper element filter, then run it with no filter at all. If you feel a difference then a K & N will help. Or go with the largest paper elemnt with the most and deepest pleats that will fit under your hood. ;D
If it ain't broke, fix it 'till it is.

I have a reuseable/washable filter in my shop vac. After a few times washing it out and reusing it the damn thing is ready for the dump. It also looks quite nasty even after a good wash.. Hmmm, maybe I need a K&N sticker on my shop vac!! Yeah.. That's it...  ;)

Depends on the application. I'm a firm believer in them and use K&N on anything performance oriented. They do move more air than a conventinal paper element and are reusable. Often when switching over from paper to a free flowing K&N the carb needs to be rejetted due to the increased airflow. I installed one on my motorcycle and had to jet up several sizes to dial in the air/fuel ratio. Made a huge difference on the performance and fuel economy as well. When i first got the bike mileage sucked....around 28mpg. After some tweaking and exhaust work it now averages 42mpg and has a LOT more power. Some of it was exhaust, some ignition but mostly it was removal of the restrictive air cleaner assembly and replacement with an open element K&N filter.

How? Take it to the strip, and run with and then without a filter, or any other change that you can make at the track.  That's how I've compared things like that.  I did a cold air intake on my other summer car and it made an ENORMOUS difference - but that also meant changing to a cone style filter and routing the air away from the engine heat. I havent tried it on the charger but mine isn't really performance oriented.

i put a K&N in all my cars, i have a 2002 Mustang GT, noticed a small difference in power, and i have a 2001 VW Beetle Sport 1.8T (turbo 20V) and it made a HUGE differnce in the turbo car, before K&N i could'nt turn tires in 2nd upshift, just a squak, now full tire peeling in 2nd and squak in 3rd!!!  on my charger (69, 440) i have a paper filter, i don't think there would be a huge improvement on the charger, cause a round paper filter has alot more surface area then modern cars with a small flat filter.  that being said, a dirty K&N, or a improperly cleaned K&N is worse than a paper filter.  a clean and properly oiled K&N filter is much less restrictive than a paper filter and actually filters better than a paper filter, have'nt you seen the K&N display with a ping-pong ball in a tube with a fan at your parts store?  all you do is swap out the same paper filter with a K&N and the ping-pong ball goes up, and down with the paper filter.   :o ;D

You can get other brands for cheaper Like Accel got their yellow performance filter then moroso got blue one I think

Consider this adding headers adds 15-25 horsepower...do you notice it...yes, adding a single plane, same thing  what about a windage tray, no not necessarily, because it has a specific use for high speed.  So I really think it is one of those its there, but you won't be able to tell things.  Just to mention though, On my daily driver I refuse to use one because in one week a new filter looks three months old, if I get a K n N it'll take what two months... Its all the same to me on a daily driver.

Johnny SixPack

Here's my reason for using K&N:

K&N 440 6-pack air cleaner $59.00 - $64.00 (and reuseable!)

Fram 440 6-pack air cleaner $138.00 from YearOne (for show only)

Although, you can find the Fram for less if you look around hard enough ($86.00 is what I paid).

Easy decision for me.

i use them in my cars im not gonna say i can feel teh difference but there is a definate cost benifit after a period of time. heres the reason why i say they will work, i put onw on my wheeler and like Ron said i had to rejet a couple sizes afterwards. thyere no doubt they increase flow and power as it coule be easily felt when i was riding. powers easier to feel when your sitting on the motor lol. just a little food for thought, i ran a k&n filter with a open air box no cover whatsoever and all i did was pit ride (wicked dusty) and i was happy with how well ther filter kept the sand out of the motor. my charger hsa the 3" and the top filter, my tacoma has one and my wifes van will get on when i needs a new filter. every little bit adds up in the end i believe.............Mike
