Just out of curiousity, can you paint successfully or change the color of the vinyl tops without damaging them? I am not talking about replacement, just changing, from the original white color to black?

To change the vinyl top color from white to black your best bet is to get a new one and replace the white one. Any typical vinyl dye will not hold up to the weather.

How did the dealers dye them when new for stuff like "White Hat specials"

Or was it just conventional and wore of off after being in the weather for awhile??

I agree, the best way to change colors is to just put on a new top. They aren't expensive and labor isn't bad either.

A "White Hat Special" wasn't always a white top (but it was always vinyl). The color of vinyl top was coded on the fender tag so that was handled at the factory.

Sarcasm detector, that's a real good invention.

My car was F8 with the A41 package.  Inside has white seats, door panels and headliner with black dash and rug. White vinyl top outside.

I still can't decide if I should paint her factory and do the white top, or go totaly different, like Plum Crazy.

I think that would be a great combo!

Plum crazy on a 69 just doesnt do it for me personally.

To be honest... paint doesn't worth againts install a new top... Maybe you will spend a little bit more and will have a little bit more effort, but worths the effort
