Guess I'm on it (as if I wasn't already). The son of some close family friends gets to fly one of these.     Probably the most impressive flying machine I've seen in person. Only a million...but it is the maintenance that will kill ya.

I love these planes too, ever since someone came to our school in the early 70's & showed us film footage of one. The same guy was showing us models of the space shuttle as well. I can't recall who he was or where he was from, but I'm guessing it had something to do with NASA. 

The Harrier to me back then as a kid was incredible. I still think it's pretty wild.

I'd like one! Following the links to the previous one they sold shows that it took about 4 years to get it assembled and back in the air. Not only can I not afford to pay mechanics that amount of time but I see that it also burns 1 gallon every 2 seconds in hover! That's Jet A and not 87 octane too. A few years ago a company was selling off a couple Mig 29s. If I had the choice (and cash) I'd have picked one of those instead but a Harrier would definitely be near the top of my list of cool planes.

IIRC wasn't Larry Ellison about to buy one a few years ago but the State Dept (or some other government agency) wouldn't let him, even if it was stripped down?

Really, if you think about it, that's the same asking price as the Bloomington Ghost.  He is willing to negotiate on the Harrier and I'm sure the Ghost could be had for less. 

Fuel consumption, maintenance, airworthiness and other issues aside, the Harrier takes up more garage space and is harder to park.  No doubt, the neighbors would complain about the noise.  Hard to insure.  There would be no wildlife in the yard after the first time you fire up the Harrier.  Might not even be much yard left.  You have to win the lottery about once a year to keep it running. 

It would be cool though.

Cool plane, but harriers are amoung the most dangerious aircraft ever made; from the LA times "...The Harrier has been involved in 143 major accidents that killed 45 Marines, including some of the corps' most accomplished pilots. A third of the fleet has been destroyed."   Accident rate for the AV-8A was  30 per 100,000 flight hours, compare with the F-16 at avg 1.75 per 100000 flying hours

A 7-year-old kid came closer to realize every kid's dream than any of us: He bought a real Harrier fighter jet for $113,000 on eBay. Yes, a Harrier Jump Jet T-Bird Aircraft XW269. The whole shebang, weaponry not included.

Sadly, his dreams were broken the same day, after his dad found out about the purchase and quickly contacted the company selling it—Jet Art Aviation—telling them the story and asking to cancel the sale. Obviously, they understood it and put it back on the auction block.

But here's the good news, kid: It wasn't really worth it. The airplane—which flew for the last time in 1997 after 26 years in the Royal Air Force—was not in working condition for legal reasons. Fixing it would have cost you several million dollars. Chin up, though. Now you will be able to spend all that money in something a lot more awesome. You know, like a college education.
