Yes, the device has 1 or 2 shims behind it to kick the door forward or rearward.  Also, it can be moved every way by loosening the 3 screws that hold the mechanism.  Once you get your door lined up, its a good idea to loc-tite those things.  Warning: have lots of patience.

So would it be then possible to bring back of the door down a bit but have front of the door still at the same level?

I'll thinking that too.
Use the hinges to line up the door.
Adjust the striker last.

There is a proceedure in the service manual using a floor jack and piece of wood how to adjust. And the striker last as UFO stated.  I have a 67 manual but it should be very similar if not the same.

"Up and Down
Adjustment of the door can be made at either the pillar or door hinge half's.

In and Out
Adjustment is made at the door hinge half. Adjust only one hinge at a time. Raising outer end of door moves upper part of door forward, when in closed position. Lowering lower part of door moves lower part forward, when in closed position.

Fore and Aft
Adjustment is made at the pillar hinge half. Adjust only one hinge at a time. Raising outer end of door, moves upper part of door into door opening. Lowering outer end of door, moves lower part of door into door opening.
