Paint gun question

Doing my very first paint job.  Primer went on smooth but paint and clear are going on a little gritty.  Not getting much orange peel.  Does this mean it's starting to dry before it hits the surface?  Should I go with more/less air?  More/less fluid?  Gun pressure is at 40psi.

Thanks.

I suggest you log onto http://www.hotrodders.com/forum/body-exterior/ and search that forum. VERY informative site and after reading a bit you should be able to hone your painting skills.
I would suggest this particular thread for the start....

Thanks, some good info on here.  Got a few pointers I can try.

What size tip does your gun have. Primers usually require a larger tip size, I have a 1.8 for using with urethane and epoxy primers, and if using polyester primer, you need an even larger tip (I have a 2.0 for poly, but still have to thin it about 10% to get it to spray to my liking).

****Edit**** I read your original post wrong....I thought you said your primer was 'gritty'.
