Do the X-pipes sound as good as the H-pipes?

My brother-in-law was telling me yesterday that he thinks V8s don't sound as good with an X-pipe exhaust as with an H-pipe. He said the H-pipe exhausts bring out much more of the muscle car sound by comparison. Have any of you found this to be true?

A lot of people have told me the X pipe is quieter than the H.  I don't know that I can personally verify it Bull much less explain it but it is definitely what I've been told.

I would tend to agree at idle , when you open it up it still sounds great !!

I heard that also because the X pipe is more of a mandraul (spelling?) bend, where as the H pipe the exhaust has to make a 45 degree turn. I also have heard that a X pipe will give you a 1 to 2hp gain over a H pipe because it is more of a direct flow. Not much, but every little bit helps.

Actually its mostly torque that benefits from the X-pipe. Not a ton but every bit helps. I run one on my 69 Charger with a warmed 383. It sounds pretty quiet in the cabin at idle. Just step out back and you'll hear a bunch. Open up the throttle and the whole neighborhood still hears you. I have had a conversation at 70MPH with all my windows down. It cancells that much resonation in the cabin. Believe me, all the sound is still out back and you can hear a bunch of it while your foot is in it. I have had x-pipes on two of my vehicles and will never run anything else. The H-pipe was a good start. They just found a better and more direct way to scavenge exhaust.

Ive heard that the Xpipe is better then the H pipe by a little and that the Xpipe has a more high piched sound. I dont know myself cuz ive never run either but i do have a H pipe exhaust system that im going to install on my car soon. I order a kit for my car before i heard the X pipe was better, oh well...

X pipe is the way to go. If you havent yet save your money and get the xpipe.

I think its ore than 1-2hp...

It is true that the exhaust sound is a little deeper With the H-pipe. You will also get more resonation in the cab. Chris 3, don't feel bad about your H-pipe. You will have the traditional sound you're looking for. It will sound bad ass anyway. somewhere between 1800 rpms and 2500 rpms you will have a loud hum in the car, but that is what some people want when they get in their muscle cars. The loud and urgent sound of fun. You can drive your dodge stratus to work if you want quiet. The difference under load is not much different. It is mostly at light throttle and idle. It is only around 5 or so horse and 10-15 ft pounds of torque. Depending on the engine package. Not enough to make anybody change a fresh exhaust system. Stay with what you have and don't spend the money if you're happy with what you have. I have the X, and a friend of mine won't change from his H. That is why this hobby is so cool. You get to be an individual.

Some of the V8's throaty sound comes from the type of cam you use too I would think. That Cuda has a bit of a lope to it, but not a whole lot. I assume it's a 440, or what?

Yep, it's got a bit of lope to it but nothing radical at all....lots of engine vacuum ; plenty for power brakes. The combo is a smallblock 408ci stroker with e-heads and comp 275* hydraulic cam. TTI headers and a 2.5in x-pipe with superturbos and 2.5in tailpipes.

I traded out my 3" TTi H-pipe for an X-pipe when I installed the 5 speed.

Can't say I noticed a big difference in sound (or power). The 5 speed completely changed the character of the car, so I really didn't get an apples to apples comparison.

Still got the H-pipe in the garage. Make me an offer.

Cool, your description sounds like what i was looking for! Looks like ill love the sound of my 383!

Here's my exhaust. I like the sound. I can talk to my passengers while cruising and you can still hear the 440 for blocks when I open it up.

You can unbolt those caps on the side to run straight pipe, the put the caps back on when you want the regular exhaust.

Factory Max Wedge stuff Bull.  Those old stockers had to run their stock exhaust system and it just so happened that the Chryslers came with those handy caps to open it up.
