Things could be worse than building a General Lee clone: What if the guy wanted to be a "Daisy Duke" clone himself?

I think we might have a bit more to say if he posted pictures of himself wearing tight jean cut-offs. :scratchchin:

So i was watching the Dukes marathon on CMT Saturday night and i was reliving my youth a bit as i was 5 years old when the show started.  The on Sunday i loaded up the kids and spouse into my Charger and we headed out to the apple farm to get apples and take a nice Sunday drive.  The apple farm does not have very many parking spots and traffic was backed up.  There was a shallow ditch between the road and the parking lot in the field and i thought i was Bo Duke for a minute and down the ditch we went and up into the field parking lot.  No more waiting to park!  My spouse was not very pleased but damn that felt good!

Paul

 Great story, I've watched it also on CMT.

Don't be so sure. If I was at a car show and saw it in the blue and white I would of walked over to see it as I don't see many in those colors.  As a GL, seen one seen em all.  His car and money, do as he wants but I would of left it original as it was real nice.

You could say the same about yet another stock Charger. If it were me, I would look at the car no matter what. If JB666's GL was parked next to this 68 in its original state, I know what car I would spend more time looking at (YEEEE HAAAA)
Make it idiot proof, and somebody will make a better idiot!

The funny thing is ,you would go through all the trouble to duplicate Lee 1 with the crooked 01 and the car is a 68??

Well, many '68 chargers were modified to look like '69s and used by the show.  Did he have the '69 grille and side markers put on it?  If not, it was proably because it would be too expensive or take too much time.

They just want to be able to use a rebel flag without looking racist.

The funny thing is, it's a confedeate navy flag.  Most battle flags were square.  And to top it all off, unfortunately lots of  people make the incorrect association of racism with the general lee car.  Thus he could not do what you said even if he actaully wanted to, which I very much doubt. That's alot of money/effort/time/trouble just to be able to say "I've got a flag on my car, neener neener neener!!!".

It's sad so many people are misinformed. I've watched every episode of The Dukes and guess what, it teaches those watching to help thy neighbor no matter who he is or what he looks like.  No racism involved.

Not to step on anybodys toes but I dont like seeing 68s or 70s done up like Generals if your going to do it do it right.

You do realise that both '68 and '69 chargers were used in th show, right?  They modified the '68s to look like a '69 (mostly for jumps, so that you would not notice unless you were really looking.

I still think it was a waste to use such a nice car to make into a GL.....especially since it isn't even the right year.

I do have a question for you guys though, would you have said the same thing had he painted the car something else?  Or is the dislike simply towards a GL clone?

If he had painted it as a Starsky & Hutch Torino, a Hazzard patrol car or a One Adam 12 patrol car I still would have questioned why.
I personally like G/L clones but you should use the right year. I've been thinking about a Bullitt clone for the last few years but that doesn't mean I'm going to paint my 383 matching #s Hemi Orange 71 Charger SE car black.

"68s and '69s were used in the show.

I don't think so. That's the is on big line of bull! Its history and heritage not always about hate.

Why I did it. I loved the show as a kid. I love all the attention and its a Charger which is a blast to drive no matter what color it is. It can always be brought back to what ever you like when you own it. I don't think it was any cheaper to do a GL Than something else. Glad I am a Mopar enthusiast not a purist and don't have to question other people cars. I spent plenty of long days and late nights with busted bloody knuckles putting mine together as many guys on this site have. It doesn't matter what it started out as, as long as you are happy with it in the end. We build them for ourselves not everybody else.

Good point.

I'm the same way, I don't give a rat's ass about what other people think, it's my car. I like all different types of modifications, upgrades, engine swaps, color changes, customizing, etc. There are some things that people do to older vehicles that just look goofy to me, like 22" rims & rubber band tires. I still say, so what, it's their car. I love using my own '69 Satellite convertible as an example since I did things to it that I liked, especially at the time I did it. Parts availability, cost, taste, (or lack of.....lol) and the age I was when I did it.

It's a true 1969 base model Satellite with....

1970 GTX front clip
1969 Sport Satellite deck lid & trim
1968 Coronet 500 seats (Had 1972 New Yorker buckets with arm rest that will be reupholstered)
1973 New Yorker steering wheel
1974 Seat belts

Personally I prefer the 1970 nose & had one in stock when I took off the nose with the dented fender. The seats from the New Yorker are 10 times more comfortable than the park bench seat that Mopar offered. The steering wheel & seat belts are temporary, but I probably won't put the stock stuff back in & will upgrade to more modern parts.

I personally don't want to own a General Lee, but my 11 year old daughter loves the car & sometimes watches the show. I'd consider doing my own '68 Charger as a Lee if I wanted one, & wouldn't care what slack I get from anyone. I enjoy standing away from my Satellite at local cruises & watch the reactions people have walking around the car trying to figure it out.  :D

I'm sure a lot of people will be totally annoyed when my '68 Charger sports a Daytona nose & wing.

I think the American public is too driven by desire for money these days.  But I still wanna be rich myself.

I think there are too many GL replicas on the road these days.  But I still wanna keep one myself.

I cant say much though because I have a Daytona clone thats built from what was left of a real R/T.

OMFG! HOW COULD YOU! YOU SHOULD BE ASHAMED OF YOURSELF! WHY WOULD YOU DO SUCH A THING!!!!!!

wow, could you imagine if I was really like that ;-) I like your car, and I like this guys general, and people should start to mind their own business if they don't like what people do with their cars, Look what I did to my car.... it was a 318 car, I could have bought a real R/T... bit it was "Mint Chip" I couldn't get over the color, and I wouldn't repaint an R/T .... So I didn't buy it.... however, on that note, you can't find a comment from me on this forum bashing anyone for what they did to THEIR car....

can we all get back to hating on the New Chargers and leave the poor Genny's the F alone?

I can't believe I ruined my car by turning it into a GENNY LEE.    My car is worth crap now.  What a waste.    It used to be nice and worth something but now it's a big orange piece of POO !    It has no value nor does it get any thumbs up.........   What the hell was I thinking ?    Now I need to go and find a new car since my car is off to the scrap yard.

The thing I hate is everyone that sees my 68, the first thing out of their mouth is "are you going to paint it orange and turn it into the General Lee?"  :brickwall:  :RantExplode: If someone wants to turn a charger into a GL then good for them, but I personally like the one from Bullet and Blade better.

Okay, think of the issue like this if you would please. You own a '68 charger, back in 1978 well 1979 a very good TV series started up and aired from 1979 to 1985. During that run that show featured one vehicle as one of the main character's of that very show that everyone came to love and like alot of. Now years later with the show from back then being so well known around the world by millions of people and more people getting to know it even from reruns and alot of people loving that one vehicle from the show and that vehicle became an icon as well. Yet you get a charger and not think someone is not going to mention or ask you about yours or when you are going to make yours like that one  sense yours and the orange one are same make and model as in a Dodge and Charger. Most people is going to look at all chargers and almost the first thing that they will think of is that orange car known as the General Lee  that they grew up with watching on the Friday nights on the TV screen back in the late '70's and to mid '80's. That is why they will ask you that one question for .

Now I wonder if they had made a series that was real good about Bullet, wonder if things would have been different about the vehicle. I know they made a series about Blade but I didn't get a chance to catch one episode of that series thought at all.. so I have no idea how good that series was.
