Between a 383, 440 & Hemi???

My torsion bars are adjusted ALMOST as far as they can go, and the nose has a more "settled" look than it did before.. Any chance that, because I'm running OEM bars that were for a 383, that I need stronger bars??

If so, who sells a good replacement bar?

mikepmcs

hi Jeff.  gimme a minute i'm looking...... Mr Angry's build I believe mentions torsions stuff.
Life isn't Father Knows Best anymore, it's a kick in the face on a saturday night with a steel toed grip kodiak work boot and a trip to the hospital all bloodied and bashed.....for reconstructive surgery. But, what doesn't kill us, makes us stronger, right?

mikepmcs

and it appears mikey was using regular suspension on his "Angrier" car as well.

check out this page, I hear the name firm feel a bunch. http://firmfeel.com/torsionb_b.htm

could be that your bars are just tired.

Most likely they are just tired. I just installed new Mopar 440/Hemi resto. bars and it rides nice. The bigger the bar the harder the ride.

mikepmcs

i'm thinking, with that monster, you need to live in this range, diameter wise.

1.00   175 HD/Street
1.06   225 HD/Race
1.12   270 Race

I agree... So my next question is who would you guys recommend for a set of replacement bars?

mikepmcs

How about Jon or Dennis? They have any input on what they use?

I think my input is going to be firm feel. they appear to be mopar suspension experts.

No.. They do crazy non-stock upgrades.. They'd recommend gutting the suspension and going with some radical race setup.. which I don't want. I like the stock setup, I just want something that'll give me a bit 'more' up front...

got a pair of  1 inch  mopar preformance  bars on mine  ,  they do stiffen up the front , but i cant compare to the stock  0.92 bars as  its been 15 years since i drove the car on the road in anger with stock set up !!  then   put the car in storage , & then was doing a nut & bolt resto 3 of them years !  , have changed so much also  uprated steel strut rods ,  thicker sway bars 1 - 1/8" & 7/8" rear , polly bushes  kyb shocks   :shruggy: :popcrn:

Jeff mine are a standard 440 R/T size and the ride is "normal" not harsh, I got them from Marsh Performance (Todd is great to deal with and has good pricing) I got rear springs from him also.  I don't think they were even 1" diameter. Same reason I used Moog rubber bushings, I love a B Body's ride, it's a big reason I've kept my Charger, to me new cars feel like I'm riding in a mini pickup truck.

I just checked and I have .920 bars, .960 are biggest Mopar listed.

That is off Marsh's sight just now. (As in what they are offering) My target has been to build as close to 1970 "stock" as I can get and new it would have come that way.   :2thumbs:

Factory 1969 torsion bars:

Charger 318/383 - 0.90"

Charger 440/426 - 0.92"

These days the factory specs are all considered a bit low.  They're not radically undersize but somewhat.

In the real world on the street you can hardly feel any difference between 0.90 and 0.96, let alone the difference between 0.90/0.92.

Factory new bars are enough, MP for upgrades is better and available at Summit... good priced...

Ebay has good options for same bars too ;) BETTER PRICED ( but limited stock )

same seller have them also in 0.92

IMHO, anything to 0.96 to 1.06 is good enough for street use. I got 1.06 ( from Firm Feel, because MP doesn't provide TBs for 73 and lates Bs ) and adjuster bolts are BARELLY threated in to get a good height, a little bit lower than stock.

Cool, thank you guys...

So... Going from my stock (tired) bars to these:

P5249158    .960" diameter-improved"B/RB" and hemi handling.    188.00

Should help out considerably, I'd say!!

I didn't see a 1" bar out there either.. Is it necessary??

I'm liking what Nacho says.. I'd rather have my bolts barely touching then maxed out..

mikepmcs

agreed.. you'll be just fine with those.  :2thumbs:

Awesome. Thank you guys!!!!!!!!   I'll order them tomorrow.

oldcarnut

I bought mine 5249158's this past Dec.  Cheapest price I found then was $179 and got the local MP dealer to price match so I didn't have to pay more for shipping. Might be worth looking into.

Nacho-RT74

what can I say, get the adjusting bolt that low is kinda scary. I would preffer get it threated in maybe on 1/3 of the thread, but was to loose the nice ride height I got. Maybe 1" T-bars it was to be a little bit better on my case

I think a "loosen" new T bar will bounce a "little bit" like a worn one at top of threads

an advice: upgrade sway bar and shocks... T-bars aren't everything! No need for THE BIIIGGER ones, but you'll notice the diff on a small stock parts upgrade

I got the BIGGER stock ones for my car, NOS at a dealer still had it at is shop and changed mine because I got DUNNO WHY a SB sway bar from assembly plant ( grrrrrrrr ) and used GR KYB shocks just because they are the only ones available for 73 and lates B bodies without mods.

I made this late changes around a year later than the T bars were upgraded, and I could REALLY notice the diff. Still not in HiPo world, but way better than what I had.

( Note... the totally stock 75 116 body Mercedes sedan my parents have, still handles WAAAAAAAY better than my 74 Charger with the upgrades LOL )

I'm already running an aftermarket front sway back and Edelbrock shocks on all 4 corners. Not saying they are the best, but I think they are better than stock...  The car rides and handles like a dream.. I'm mostly concerned about the monster oil pan hanging low.. Along with my headers... I'd just like it up a bit..

Nacho-RT74

:2thumbs:

then 0.96" should be way enough.. being new it was to be enough but now being thicker, EVEN BETTER. Maybe will thread in 1/3 to 1/2 of the bolt.

My old and original from factory 0.92" bars ( Or it was 0.96 ? dunno remmeber ) were still pretty much decent condition after all these years  and they were around 2/3 or 3/4 of the bolt in.... Big Block Car
