I have been chasing a rough idle and a ticking noise for sometime, when my car is cold its like its running on seven cylinders.
I replaced all the lifters today what a difference it has made. Car idles like it should  and starts easier.
The good part is it was an easy job to do i pulled them out with a magnet which only cost me 10 bucks.

absolutely a great idea for a tired motor...i did this with a high mileage 318 in my dad's old dodge...it felt like a new motor after that..

Can you guys give some detail on how this is done...I have a very tired 318 in my '71 and like the idea of easy fix until I get the money for a rebuild.

Do you have to break it in again?

Easy to do
purchase 16 lifters do one side at a time
take off rocker covers you may need to buy some new gaskets
undo the five rocker gear bolts (tighten to 25 foot-pounds)
pull rocker gear off make a note how it comes off i put a table right next to the fender to place it on.
pull out the eight push rods lay them on the table make a note to which order they go back in.
Now is a good time to inspect the push rods and rocker gear for wear.
Get a magnet i got a strong  one that is extendable. Put it on the lifter and pull them out one at a time.
Get the new lifter and put some lifter break in lube on them at the bottom where it meets the cam.Stick it on the magnet and slide the new lifter into its hole. After doing all lifters place the push rods back into the seat at the top of the lifters i layed a small rod across the head to help line them up and keep them in place.
Now the tricky part i got another rod layed it across the rocker arms to keep them in place while i put the rocker gear back into place.
Now the important part make sure the push rods are seated in the lifters and in the rocker arms, work from the middle out slowly hand tightening down the rocker gear. Now tighten to at least 25 foot-pounds.
Now double check those push rods too make sure they are seated in the right spots top and bottom a little bright torch comes in handy for this.
Now if you are 100% sure the push rods are right put on the rocker covers.
Start the car they will be noisy, while the lifters bleed up for a few minutes.
Hope this helps it took me a couple of hours to do each side.

Thanks for the detailed description.  I'm inexperienced with the inner workings of the engine.  Like a lot of guys, I have the desire to make my car better but not the knowledge or money.  Thanks again.
