INTAKE PHLENOM ASSY AND RECK question

I just took my car into the dealership to make sure it was running okay because my check engine light came on.  I have to drive about six hours straight to a different state soon because I am moving and wanted to make sure it would be safe to drive.  The dealership mechanic did a diagnoisis and said I needed to have the intake phlenom assy and reck changed.  I don't know what this piece is or what it does.  But I know it would cost a lot to change.  I have only six months left on my lease and don't want to invest that much to fix something if the car will last me for the next six months without changing it before I turn it in and get a new lease.  I need to know if this is something that needs to be replaced immediately or if it would be safe to drive six hours straight and last me until my lease is up.  If you have any clue about this car part and the urgency of replacing it, please let me know.  The car has only 31,000 miles on it.  And it's only a few years old.  Please help.  -N

What year car and which engine? I think the word you're looking for is "plenum". Have you noticed a change in how the car drives or in your gas mileage? Is it making a noise?

Not sure if it applies but try resetting the code and and see if it comes back. I seriously bet that's what the dealer was going to try first (no, I really have no faith in most dealers).

Sarcasm detector, that's a real good invention.

Just writing what it says on the invoice.  But you're prob right on the spelling. Thanks.  It's an '06 car and a V6 engine.  Any ideas?  This is what happens when you're a girl and go to the dealership.  You don't know if you're getting the runaround and they just want to make you spend all your money.

I would like to know what the heck a "reck" is......any factory mechanics around?
Remember the average response time to a 911 call is over 4 minutes.

The average response time of a 357 magnum is 1400 FPS.

No change in how the car drives or the gas mileage.  Not sure what the reck is either.

Troy, the guy at the dealership cleared the thingy that makes the check engine light go on.   I don't know even where the fuses are to check the No. 11 fuse.  But what I really want to know is if this is a danger to me if something is really wrong with this part of the car.  Or is it just more of a nusiance because I have to pay more for gas because it runs out faster?  Any idea??  No clicking noises or anything and I haven't seen much of a change in it burning more fuel between fill ups.

I dunno, I've never heard of a reck and I cant find a definition of it. Changing an entire intake plenum I imagine would be very expensive. If it were me, I would get a second opinion or take someone more savvy with cars to the dealer to talk to the tech. I don't know what kind of car you have, but chances are there's an online forum for it (my father has a '93 Mercury Villager and he found an online forum group for them if you can believe it!!). Post the question there, there's bound to be an expert....

In general, new fuel injected engines can handle these little issues without major failures.  The computers have default settings to use if a sensor fails and can rework parameters to adjust for things like a leaky plenum.

It may burn more gas, it won't pass emission testing, but it'll keep running...probably.

If its like the plenum gasket on my 95 Ram  it was down on power a little bit and it will consume oil. Keep checking your oil as it will go down.  I would most definately stop on your 6 hour trip  many times and check the oil.

Seriously though, I'd get a second opinion on this. Most auto parts stores check codes for free (in hopes you buy the new part from them).

I'd like to add another vote to the "second opinion" column.   Don't trust any dealership, ever, for anything.  Especially when they give you paperwork with gross misspellings....how do you spell plenum like that, seriously, did they even try?  And nobody on this forum, or any mechanic I know outside of this forum knows what a "reck" could possibly be.

I'm supposing you have a 3.5 V6 in your car.     The intake manifold is plastic and has known problems.    It basically causes a rough idle.

I googled and saw this post in a 300 forum that may be helpful to you.  http://www.300cforums.com/forums/problems-dealer-service/73124-cracked-intake-manifold.html
