I've never been quite sure but how can you tell the difference between the years in 3rd gen Chargers?
1977 Dodge Charger SE - Sold 4/18/15
2013 Chevrolet Camaro RS
1993 GMC K1500
1943 Farmall A

The 6th digit of the VIN

WM23N1   would be  a 71

1 is 71
2 is 72
3 is 73
4 is 74

Foreman72

well, there are a verity of differences...the easiest (and often quickest) is to look at the front grilles...

71 hideaways have only horizontal bars

71 stationary

72 hideaway have both horizontal and vertical bars

72 stationary

73 and 74 both had stationary headlights only...those two years are a bit harder to tell apart...

73

74

thats really all i have to offer...

hope it helps some :2thumbs:

Easiest way to tell the diff between 71 and 72 is the marker lights imo.

Next between 72-74 is the front bumper emblem.

As for 73-4

Different gas tanks, different trunk floors (hump for gas tank in 74), also different lower brackets for bumperettes, and finally shoulder belt retractors..just to name a few as i dont know them all.

Looking at the last pic of that 74 it might be a 73 considering there are no shoulder belt retractors.

Alright thanks all! Saw a few third gens at my local show and wasn't sure on years

74 don't have hood vents 73 do. So thats one way to Identify 73 from 74 (look at above pics Foreman posted)

Your right about the seatbelt detractors on the black charger photo ( sharp eye's)
73/74  only year with side window louvers on SE
71 only year with flush mount side marker lights
Different bumper guard sizes between 71/72 and 73/74

And lets not forget the Tailights did anyone mention those?

AKcharger

'73/74 front fenders have a higher cut out for the wheel as well. '71/72 is about 7 inches from top of fender to wheel opening, on '73/74 it's only about 5 inches

stuga

I did't know that about the fender cut being different, interesting, very interesting :scratchchin:

chargd72

Also, the upper fender lines meet at the door in the 73/74.  They do not meet in a 71/72.

Don't forget the C pillar is way different between 71/72 and 73/74 too.

I prefer the small quarter window on the 71-72

I learn something new ever day, i never knew there was a difference in the 71 vs. 72 hideaway lights. :scratchchin:
