My opinion here...all you would need is the same "height" tire (or "tall equivalent")...width of tire or wheel does not matter for spare....all you are gonna use it for is emergency, right?

Neal_J

Same dilemma here.   I'm running 255-60-15 in front and 275-60-15 out back, both BFG-T/As on Magnums.  The spare is a 14" tire on a Rallye rim.

I initially approached the problem from the "what's the widest spare that will fit?" approach.  However, since neither will fit, I'm now more interested in the "what's the best height tire that will fit?"

Using the suggestions per this thread & the specs per TireRack.com, my tires are 27.1" and 28" tall, F&R respectively.  Although the 235 will fit, I think I will go with a either a 225-60-15 or 235-70-15 because the height of the tire (27.3" or 27.8", respectively) comes the closest to splitting the difference between the height of the two tire sizes.  Mount it on a Magnum and my life is complete. OK, slightly closer to complete.

In a pinch, I'd go The Chris Route & use USAA for towing.

However, I like idea of having the option of having a usable spare just in case.  I'm a belt & suspenders guy for stuff like getting stuck on the side of the freeway...

Thanks all!

Neal, remember this information:

Front:  255-60-15, 27.1" height
Rear:   275-60-15, 28.0" height
Midpoint:  27.55" (ideal spare height)

BFG T/A Spare Options, per TireRack:
a) 225-60-15, 27.3" height
b) 235-70-15, 27.8" height

(Since both are 0.25" off ideal height, go with the 225)

well in the end went to all that trouble of making sure i could run 255x60 R15
at all four corners  , on an 8 inch  wheel , with all four having the same back space , & more importantly ! giving the (look ) i was after , with out any rubbing ! ,i made my own spare tire hold down bracket , & located where i could have a 255x 60R15  on a  15 x 8 wheel  as close to the stock location ! ,  only required drilling two extra holes in the trunk floor :yesnod: so i have what i wanted all 5 tires & wheels the same size  , &  can be swapped front to back & spare wheel as required   :yesnod:

In this example, I'd go with the tire that matches the rear tire diameter the closest to reduce the wear on the Sure-Grip and spider gears.
