904 transmission slipping?

I've been dealing with an ongoing shifting problem with my trans so I finally located a plain stock valve body to swap in and see if it would cure the delayed shift problem.
Took it out for a test run and it was working fine, nice shift rpm's and also downshifting like it should.
Decided to get on it a little and noticed that the rpm's went up but the tires didn't spin so I immediately went home and figured it might be a little low on fluid.
Topped it off and took it out again, this time the slipping was getting worse to where by the time I was back to the street I live on I could only idle the car in any forward gear, but reverse is firm and solid.
This has a new filter, fluid, bands adjusted, kickdown linkage setup properly, etc.
What would cause these symptoms?
Also, the transmission was shifting firm and crisp before the valve body swap, just that it would shift really late until warm.

reverse is engaged with more pressure than are 1st and 3rd. so reverse will stick pretty well.  bad front band or blow by on front servo OR (and most likely the issue) a bad front clutch piston seal is allowing fluid to seep past it not allowing the clutches to engage properly.  all of which will cause for an increase in tranny temps and ultimately failure of components (read as metal transfer).

warmer a trans gets, the thinner the fluid.  cold fluid seals better than warm fluid.  hence it had no issues until it was warmed up.

Well I'm pretty sick of messing with this 904 so I think it's time for a rebuild.

but I dont see a rebuild kit for a '68 904 transmission.
As long as I have it out and all apart, I would like to replace any parts that wear and also upgrade any parts to handle more hp.
Anyone know of a good master rebuild kit available?

any autoparts store will have a decent, and complete, master rebuild kit.  904 kits are really cheap compared to 727's.

make sure you get a master rebuild kit and not a banner kit.

$400 shipped (the cheap way).  $550 shipped in a container, but i need my container back.

reason most do not sell the rear band, most rear bands are not used that much to warrant extreme wear.  so, they could be used again in the new overhaul.
