Does anyone know if it's possible to get the Green Brearing kit for an 8-3/4 at a local bearing house such as motion industries? My local auto parts stores are having trouble finding it.
If so, do you know the maufacturer part# ?

Thanks

Nevermind,  I just found a few info sources that said these are not suitable for street applications and are made for dragracing mostly.

im pondering the same situation now, i however think im giong to run them. pantera's came with roller bearings. fords also used them from the factory.   a tapered bearing is a stronger bearing, but im giong to order new axles.   if i dont like them ill switch later.

Nothing wrong with running sealed green bearings on the street. Unless you plan to go road racing or autocrossing, the greens are more than adequate for street use.

There are several brands, but chances are all the bearings are made by Timken. The Moser brand seems to be the best priced (through Summit... $50 IIRC). The MP kit is way over priced.

:iagree: Got the "greenies" loaded on the 35 spline Strange axles in my new Dana.   This car will be seeing plenty of street action.  :icon_smile_cool:

Never used them in a Mopar but did use them on a Caddy I had. Worked fine, but unless PW and AC is HP it does not count.

Thanks for the replies folks,, I'm reconsidering going with the green bearings again.

Chryco Psycho

you may have to shorten your axles 1/4 or so with the green brgs as well

deputycrawford

Chryco, you mentioned shortening the axels for the green bearing kit. My 69 Charger 8 3/4 went to greens and a new pig all at once and I now have an awful vibration from 70 MPH to 90 MPH. Now don't start...lol I have it on Milan Dragway when Im running it. My axels are severlly preloaded when I tighen the flange nuts. Should I shorten my axels too? Is that maybe the vibration problem?
If it ain't wide open; it ain't running.        Rule number one in motocross racing: Pin it; row the gear box; and wait until you hit something.     At work my motto is: If you need me, call someone else.

yeah , the green brgs sit the axle in about 1/4 " so if the spacer block is not removed the retainer flanges will not sit flush & could definatly cause the vibration
what you don`t do 100 on the highway?

deputycrawford

I have to say officially no, I don't do 100 MPH on the highway. he heh he I will definately get the axels shortened in the spring. I wondered if that is the cause of the car's power seeming to soften at half track where the vibration comes in.

Chryco Psycho

well if the retainer plates are tight it is side loading the brg HARD & they should be getting pretty darn hot but 80 MPH

deputycrawford

Ok. This is a vibration that I can drive through hot or cold. Its the same every time I drive it. For some reason it has gotten slightly less noticable since I have drag raced it. I only drove the 4.10 gear one or two short easy heat cycles. Then it got to be January. It rained for two days while warm and washed all the salt from the roads. You'll never guess what I did. That's right; HAMMER TIME! I put it to the wood and rowed the gear box many times. I sounded like Roscoe P. Coltrane. I kept saying "we got em now flash" while floored. I always did wonder if I didn't give it enough break in time.

well I would carefully check it , it may not be the vibration but it may still be wrong

deputycrawford

I did have the whole pig disassembled and checked for wear pattern and tolerences. I also had them remove the center plug since I didn't have the tappered bearings in it. That didn't seem to help at all. I even tried shims to angle it up and down. Nada. I will try shortening the axles. If that doesn't work I will buy a moser 60.

if the center spacer block has been removed shortening the axles will not help

440 Fanatic

Hey Chryco,
What is the spacer block you are referring to?
I just installed my differential a few weeks ago and I don't recall any spacer block. It's a 489 case, open differential.
I just received the green bearing kit today, It's the mosler kit with retaining rings.
Anything else I need to be concerned about during the install?

Thanks

Chryco Psycho

there is a cross pin that floats in the diff so the axle become like one solid rod so the adjuster can take up the slack all diffs have them
can`t htink of anything else that will cause a problem
