Hey guys,

I rebuilt my 18 spline 4spd which is original for my 69 Charger RT and I'm getting ready to paint it cast metal.

I was wondering about the markings. There appears to be two dabs of white paint toward the rear, lime green near the bottom and "605" in yellow above that. I'm not sure if the dabs of white are markings or what the "605" means. I think the green marking indicates a correct match for assembly but I'm not sure on that either.

Any help understanding this is appreciated.

I was also wondering how many people are restoring their transmissions with the markings.

Thanks.

The 605 stencil is the code marking for a #3410610 transmission which is for a '69 Hemi or 440HP. Not sure about the paint daubs, could be inspection marks.  :shruggy:
Pardon me but my karma just ran over your dogma.

John is correct on the numbers. The "605" will appear on the buildsheet if you have it. All 69 18 splines I have show the lime green over the numbers. They were usually brushed with trans case vertical as evidenced by the direction of the drips.  They usually have a white "X" near the "605" as well. Why paint it? The fact that the markings are that visible still tells me the trans is in nice shape. There are other finishing options. I always put the markings back on....gives the car its unique personality back. The white splotches on the tailshaft etc. are on pretty well every trans I see as well..... they are some kind of I.D. or inspection marks.

Great information!

The other paint option I'm considering is a clear semigloss/matte coat, since the markings are still visible, in order to prevent rust.

Thanks again.
