Hey guys, I've got a complete 1968 440 motor that was bored 30 over 20 years ago, 12K mi. put on it and then parked. It has sat 18 years give or take. Ran great when it was parked.  What do you think is a good fair price for it? THANK'S,     Chuck.......................

What kind of parts in the motor,  meaning that may make the price range different.  I can buy 440's cheap with a cast crank and small valve heads.

If you spent some time and funds and have a steel crank good pistons, etc.  That will make a difference

Don't know whats in it other than a cam. It's in a 1968 Dodge motorhome. And I'm going to sell it.

I think that you should donate it to the good and welfare of poor starving engine less Charger people in Utah......I can further narrow it down  much more precisely here if you want so that it's REAL clear where to send it. :icon_smile_wink:

GEE GTX, who would that be? :slap: I'm trying to get a price on it because my mechanic wants it as part trade? But I'll tell you what. If I don't work out a deal with my mechanic, I'll talk with you about it. BTW, what's it going into????? Chuck...................

the problem i have with a motor like that is that it's already 30 over. if there's a problem from laying around it's gonna have to be bored again. when you go that big  on the street. these 440's like to run hot. well they always run hot in the summer any way.

i just bought a complete running 1968 440 hp motor for $600

That IS a good price

Ya know,, the motorhomes came with 426s and 413s alot back then, are you sure it's the 440?

At the auctions I go to those motorhomes go for under $500.00 I bought one a couple of months ago for $50.00  (smallblock)

He has a good point, most motor homes particularly through the 69 model year came with 413's
Have you read the block pad?

Well IF it were a 440 and IF I could get it here then I'd be using it for one of two projects. Either the '68 Charger or an E.T car   ( probably an early Dart or Barracuda) we are trying to build  :drive: - if we can scrounge all the parts and still work on the regular cars too.

I agree with the other guys though that many of the motor homes got 413's but I have seen quite a number or 440's in them too!
I used to raid the motorhome section first since most of the guys would look only for muscle cars to get motors from. After the motorhomes I'd move on over to the grandma New Yorkers and Imperials.
Many a time I'd find a nice 440 sitting there waiting for me long after the other cars had been plundered.  :nana:
I once bought a running 440 for $100.00 from the boneyard when they had been getting $350.00 - $400 .
The only reason was that it sat in a 1968 Grandma car in the corner and everyone had passed it by. I found it missing the carb and distributor. I went back the next day with a battery, gas, carb, dist and wires and she fired right up and ran strong! :boogie:
The guys even gave me the trans and air conditioning equipment with it!

It seemed like the smaller motorhomes like the Dodges had more 440's ( 360's later)  and the larger Winnebago's had the industrial 413's  although I would have thought it would be opposite.

Oh well, I know where a few 413 motorhomes are now but don't need them.

You know, this backs up what I said in another post. I'm really envious of people who don't live 500 miles from another major city.
As I said before, we have to travel a long ways to get to the deals and everyone around here hoards the Mopar goodies and WILL NOT share!
It's seriously like a pack of wolves around here, if an ad goes up there are 20 guys calling on it and at least 7 are guys who don't even use them, they have the bucks and  buy them and sit on them or sell them for even more$$ while the others of us go without an engine or part for our project. I seriously can usually get better prices on Ebay even with shipping than locally.

The prices I've been running into for a decent 440 BARE BLOCK have been $300-$500!!
That might even be a late block too for that price. I have the number of a guy who has a '77 motor complete and wants $650.00 for it :o
Old 906 heads - $250- $300.00
I'd be all over a recently rebuilt 440 for $450.00

I've pretty much given up hope of getting another '68-'70 block for my cars, all mine are 66's and I'm good with that.

One benefit though of buying the block and building is that you know what's in your motor and when it was done for positive.

Do me a favor and don't move to Utah, we have enough competition for parts!

BigBlockSam

i'm in the northeast. everything here is at least 30% more than down south. if you don't call the ad the first couple of hours its gone. i see alot of  mopar parts at a good price's coming from the ohio area .  Rene

gee, a 440 of that vintage in a motorhome has to have a heavy duty block, heavy rods, and forged crank. you struck gold!!!  see if theres a piolt hole in the end of the crank for manual trans.   bruce

Wow,

Well I need to up what I charge....

heck I have a 73 440 in the shed when mock up is done she is certainly for sale.

BigBlockSam

i  picked up a complete 73 440 for $150. i got a friend selling me a 76 440 for $200 so there out there. I've been buying all the hp motors i can find in the area.  i designed a stand that i can make , that will hold 8 motors . 4 on top and 4 on cradles  underneath. Rene

I dont think you have to worry about that ;D

We totally jacked Skip68's thread, should we let him have it back now?

Sorry 'bout that dude! ;)

If that's a 440 I'd be for keeping it myself unless it's cracked or runout but you can probably make some nice bucks out of it otherwise. Be cost prohibitive to ship it to me anyway. :'(
If the crank is drilled it is a better thing for those who might want to put a stick behind it. Of course I guess if the engine were to be rebuilt then it could be drilled.  If it's a '68 then it's a forged crank unless I've been wrong all these years. Cast didn't come til what....about mid to late 71 depending on your info?
It's probably got 906 heads which are of course good but a dime a dozen. They are good open chamber heads unless they are really hacked then they are boat anchors or shop door stops.
Cam, chain etc = disposable imo
All I'd really be into if I were a buyer would be block, crank and rods. Maybe the heads.
Sorry if this is rundant knowledge, don't know what you already know.

Hell, come to think of it I'd keep any Mopar big block except maybe a 361 and any good 340 I could get too but if you run across any of those junky things, what did they call them.....426 hemi? I'd just toss it over here, nasty old things!!  :drool5:

I will pay the freight for that! ;D ;D ;D

Our women are frigid anyway!  :P

Well, if you guys won't give me 25k for the motor then you can't have it!!! Before you wonder why $25k, I have a drill in my hand, so how rare of a motor do you want?????? I can make it one of a kind.... :smilielol: :haha: Anyway, thanks for the ride. I'll go ahead and tell the guy  $500. That gives him everything, mounts, headers,(it has headers) a 727, and brackets. I think that's fair. :scratchchin: If he does not want it , then I will give it to anyone here for free. You just pay shipping. If that doesn't work, then I will have no choice other than to build a nice spare motor!  Thanks, SKIP68.............................

ChargerBill

If it's running or was recently running then $400 to $500 is fair. You can't use the price of a '76 440 as a guide for pricing a '68 HP block... Some may say the differences between the years aren't enough to worry about, but I'd pay $450 for a 68, 69, 70 HP 440 before I'd pay $250 for a '76 440.
