My 68 charger R?T doesn't have an inline fuel filter. It has the canister mounted above the fuel pump and a filter in the inlet to the carburator. All the books call for a 2 piece fuel line from the fuel pump. What are the 2 pieces? Should I have an inline filter? and if so where does it go.

That is a "vapor separator" above your pump, there is a filter on the pick up in the tank referred to as a "sock".  :scratchchin:

Thanks Neal, So why do they say my fuel line is 2 piece? Are they counting the rubber line from the seperator as the 2nd piece? And does this mean I don't have an inline filter?
Thanks again, Willy

It has a return line back to the tank to bleed off vapors that could form in the gas line on it's way to the carb. hence "2 lines", one to the pump and one back to the tank after the pump. The separator can is shown in the factory service manual (FSM) if you don't have one I advise getting one as they explain it nicely with a cut away diagram of the can included.  :2thumbs:

Here is a pic of a vap sep mounted.

Notice the proper fuel pump with the correct outlet position (with the small brass adapter between the pump outlet and the steel fuel line fitting) and keystone clamps clamping the rubber fuel line in place. That's how it's done correctly for restoration!  :2thumbs: (Thanks for your help in the past Maxwellwedge!)

Thanks everyone for the valuable information. This is a great place to find out all of the little things to make a restoration correct. Thanks again Willy

Yes, a good picture for reference, keep in mind, there is also the 1/4in return line hooked up
to that fuel vapor separator as well, not shown in that picture, unless you are not going to
hook it up.

Short answer:  Just the sock filter in the tank, a screen in the vapor separator, and a screen in the carb inlet.

Long answer:  My '69 R/T's fuel system was butchered.  I replaced the pathetic electric fuel pump with the correct mechanical, installed a repro vapor separator, the two steel fuel lines from the pump, to separator, and to carb.  I didn't know what was in the tank, so I added an in-line filter in the engine compartment before the pump.  The car didn't die for fuel half way through one gear any more.  Today, I just ditched the Edelbrock, and installed the 4618S I got on eBay after rebuilding it.  Much better now.  Now it doesn't bog, and it doesn't crap out on the top end.  If you don't know what you're doing, keep it stock.  Idiot (previous owner).

That is a filter with a return line it has nothing to do with vapor, and other than the tank sock its the only inline filter on a 440 hp. C body cars didn't have a return line as they only had a 5psi fuel pump. The hp and hime on the other hand had 9psi pumps.
