Well now, that was a fun oil change

I don't know if I forgot to lube the o-ring three months ago when I installed the Mopar oil filter on my 94 Dakota but I'm pretty sure that turning the filter the wrong way the first couple tries definitely didn't help it come off. Only one other time have I had this much trouble with an oil filter on my first Dakota (an 89) back in about '93 which I think had the original filter when I bought it at 30 some-odd thousand miles. :P That one I finally was able to get off by driving a screwdriver through it but when I did that to this one it just shredded it. By the time I got done twisting, ripping and pulling chunks of shrapnel off all that was left was the base. Finally I was able to hit the flange with my big screwdriver and break it loose.

So, lesson of the day, don't be like me. Don't forget to lube the o-ring and always remember, lefty-loosey. :coocoo:

Man that does suck.    :o   I had to do the screwdriver through the filter trick 2 years ago.    :rotz:  Pain in the arss.  So, how many band aids are on your fingers ?  :icon_smile_big:

Surprisingly there was no bloodletting although based on the way things went today I fully expected to end up getting stitches, or busted knuckles at the very least.

BigBlackDodge

Looks like you used a stick of dynamite to get that off!

take it back to the parts store and tell em it was defective :D

Looking at the damage, you must have fingers of steel.     I would have had more blood than oil doing that filter change.    This goes to show you it's true.... You mess with the Bull, you get the horn.   :icon_smile_wink:

Wow you sure showed that sucker...

I was past the point of no return. :P Once you poke a hole in it it's either get it off or have it towed to the shop. But yea, there was more than just a hole by the time I got done with it. :naughty:

This is why Bull is not allowed in a China shop.

Yeah but those Bull's were not dealing with a pesky oil filter.

:smilielol: You made me laugh! I've had to hammer and chisel a few in my day, now I lube them with Teflon sprayed on a rag.

I've had to do the screwdriver trick a couple times. I bought oil filter pliers several year ago, they've came in real handy, but probably wouldn't have helped in this case.
Still looking for 15x7 Appliance slotted mags.....

Thats the craziest oil filter I have ever seen. I am going to save the image for the day I teach my son how to change the oil. "Son this is why you always lube the O-ring". The worse rutine matinece problem I ever had was when I was changing the spark plugs in my Ford Aerostar mini-van. They broke clean off  :flame:. It sucked bad  :brickwall:. Not much you can do, some luck out and free them with an easy out (which didn't work) or remove the heads (which I didn't feel like doing) So I ended up buying a new van.  ;)

I can't even get the spark plugs out of my Dakota unless I get the engine hot first. I tried changing them out when the engine was cold and they wouldn't budge so I got smart and didn't push it. Didn't think much about it until later when by happenstance I decided to try again after driving it. Came right out that time.

Yeah been there done that. :hah:  I was all the way down to the threaded ring that I had to chisel off. Never did the righty tighty thing though.
This car was sold many years ago to somebody in Wisconsin. I now am retired and living in Florida.

I didn't lube gasket before but I still managed to take filters off. Not sure how you got that one stuck so bad.

It may have been trying to take it off turning it the wrong way and tightening it super tight... I was changing the oil in my car once and I was turning the oil pan bolt the wrong way, by the time I realized what I was doing the oil pan bolt was a circle,  ;) it took a pair of channel locks and a lot of force to get that sucker off   .

WOW! That thing looks like a grenade went off inside it!!!  :o

I've had that problem before and it does really suck.  My dads diesel truck mechanic told me about using a strap wrench next time.  IT WORKS GREAT!!!!  I've used it for years now without fail.  You put a ratchet on it with whatever extension or swivels and right off it comes.
