68 Charger - Two Speaker Fader Controller

Our 68 Charger has a solid state AM radio connected to the speaker in the dash. We wish to add one other speaker in the rear and a fader control. We understand the fader control is supposed to be mounted on the bottom of the instrument panel. Does it go in the hole directly under the ash tray or the hole about 5 inches closer to the steering column?

We're currently trying to find and purchase a two speaker fader controller with wiring. Any leads you'd care to provide would be appreciated. We've checked e-bay and our normal sources but can only find the c-body wheel type controllers.

Once we see the fader and associated wiring we can probably figure out how to install it. However, if anyone has a schematic showing the connections for a two speaker fader controller kindly post a picture of it here or e-mail it to me. rhmitch@cmaaccess.com

Not sure about the location you note as being at the bottom of the dash.  Mine is located radio height and had a bezel matching the instrument panel texture labeled "speaker" I believe.  Do not have pics handy but perhaps someone does and could help clear this up for you.

other info....

single speaker radio is a 2 watt unit- one transistor
two speaker radio is a 4 watt unit -  two transistors

best way is to look at the front above the volume and tuning controls- you will see a transistor -and the other side will be none- a 2 watt unit!

Correct. On a 68 the fader switch is on the radio faceplate. On rear speaker-equipped 68s the regular faceplate has two extra holes drilled in it; one for the fader knob and a second small one to hold the fader plate tab in place. The chrome nut at the base of the knob also helps hold the plate. Once you get a fader switch and fader plate all you have to do is drill those holes and install. Then of course comes the wiring issue but installing the switch itself is pretty easy.

Great pic, looks just like mine except for yours doesn't have a folded up piece of paper stuffed behind to keep it from rattling as you drive along.

Many thanks for all the excellent feedback and the source for the rear speaker bezel. I'll also check the radio to determine if it is a 2 or 4 watt unit before proceeding.

Your pictures certainly make it clear where the fader is to be located / mounted. After having read the following in the Dodge '68 service manual I was certain the fader controller went under the dash.

"Tuning is controlled by five push buttons and the manual tuning control, and the on-off switch is controlled by the dual knob on the left side of the radio. The rear fader control, if so equipped, is located on the bottom of the instrument panel."

The manual I'm using covers Charger, Coronet and Dart. Maybe that's a correct statement for one of the other models. Again, thanks for the excellent feedback.

Well, it doesn't surprise me that the book says something like that because 68s are a quirky model year. They might have originally designed the fader switch that way but I doubt it ever happened. 1968 was a major transition year. Some things that are found on the early 68s are different on the later 68s.

I also have the fader switch and as far as I know you also need the amplifier box that mounts on the glove box liner.

I have seen a radio bezel with a button in it for sale for a long time locally but never looked into it since it was a 68 part......
I might try to locate the part for you if the guy still has it or if it might be still advertised......
