okay so for new years eve i took a nice drive to chico and half way through the trip i discovered that my passenger tail lights are out, i checked the bulbs and they were not broken and since there was nothing i can do i carried along with my drive. I get to chico and its dark so i turn on my lights, i look at my tail lights and they are all working. so i put on my passenger side blinker and they dont blink but my driver side does, i then had my friend press the break peddle and i noticed that my passenger side was still lit but only the drivers side light got brighter  :scratchchin: i think it might be the turn signal switch in my steering column since i noticed before all this happened that it started to smoke a bit. when i got home i went to the gas station and smoke started to fill my car, since i could smell it was electrical i quickly disconnected the battery. i found the my fuse for the tail lights refused to blow and it burnt out my wires :brickwall:

where did come the smoke ? cab ? trunk ?

chance for a damaged turning switch is a posibility, but it can be anywhere from there up to trunk.

You need to check the BROWN wire conditions from turning switch up to rear tail lights first.

after check the brown wire is still insulated and not shorter, feed with 12 volts that brown wire to check for passenger side bright lights functioning.

you also can check for continuity at turning switch between white wire ( coming from brake pedals ) and brown wire ( output for passenger rear brighters )

same for turning function between red wire ( coming from turning flasher ) to brown wire on left side lever position.

Smoke it could be not rear lights related, something else could burn at a side of the malfunctioning

i can see the wire that burned its completely destroyed and it goes to my fuse box right next to the fuse that controls tailights and i forgot to say that my tail lights dont work at all now, the first time it smoked it came from inside the steering column and i could see the smoke come out of were my blinker switch is and it happened when i turned on the passenger side blinkers. second time is smoked it came from the dash and it was a wire to the fuse box

ok, when we say tail lights, are we talking about positioning function or blinkers ?

positioning function has nothing to do with column, thats why I ask about.

on 66/69s only functions on column are side blinkers, brakes and horn.

brakes are constant source inside column JUST when pedal pressed... turning are allways powered on RED wire when ign switch feeds ACC at that harness, but only feeding sides ( brown/tan to right side light green/dark green to left side, being darker colors to rears and feeding when braking from white wire ) when lever is set

since 70, then hazzards are inside too

umm i really dont know the difference, when i put on my turn signals i can hear the blinkers going but my tail lights are not working bo power to them now probably because that wire to the fuse box is completely wasted so i will replace that and see where i stand from there and hopefully i can trace the other shorts

parking lights are the road lights when you set on first position of lights switch

brighters/blinkers is the high power fillament being lighted on for turning, hazzards and brakes
