Hi, I have a 70 Charger 500 with the 383...went to Napa to get a Gold filter and the guy asked if it takes the shorty or the full size...I didn't know so held off.....thoughts? thanks!

Ghoste

Get the full size.  The shorty fits and it seems to be what many places are pushing of late but go with the full size.  There is plenty of room, it will be easier to install and remove, it has more filter area, and it is the correct size anyway.  :2thumbs:

mjwebb

thanks...wasn't sure I could choose either...thought maybe one or the other was designated for my application for whatever reason, but yeah...bigger is better in filter capacity for sure

bordin34

On my 400 with power steering, only the shorty fits because of the belt that drives the pump.

Never knew that.  Is that the case for all 3rd gens?  What is it that is different on the 1st and 2nd gens?

bordin34

I have no idea but I know it does not fit on mine and everything looks to be in the factory place. The shorty barely fits in there.

bordin34

I have one that's 4-7/8" long and it does not fit.

the 51515 and the 51085 will fit both applications (bordin make sure you are using the appropriate length power steering belt, yours may be too long).

i know, i have used both.

NAPA filters are made by wix.  You can get the same filter in a PRO-TEC package (sold by the case, but still made by WIX) for a lot cheaper.  O'Reilly's sells them to installer customers for resale onto "their" customers during oil changes.

PH8 is a Fram filter.  it is the same filter based upon dimensions and application, but it is not the same filter based upon flow rate, filtration and quality.

sooo, where do they have the specs for flow rate, filtration, etc to compare all the filters of the same dimensions??

turns out Napa offers the their Gold in only the shorty...according to the rep anyway so i bought it...appears to be very well made...but they have both sizes in the Wix...confusing...I'll just use the shorty...heck, I put 1,500 miles on my car last year and will just change the oil once a year which only costs $20.00 or so using Shell Rotella 15W40 and the Napa Gold...filter capacity shouldn't be an issue changing at that interval...quality oil and filter changed frequently for cheap should keep the engine clean

this last one, i can see where they come from and agree mostly, but the purolator premium plus is put aside against a wix racing filter imho

thanks lots of reading, i've been buying fram filters for years, i guess that will stop now............................. :brickwall: :brickwall:

On 73/74s BBs since water pump housing inlet was changed to passenger side are harder to fit longers because the power steering pump fits now lower on engine bay making the belt running just right in front of filter.  Its tricky but posible.

on earliers you won't have any problem to fit any kind of short or long, pump fits hight in to engine bay.

HOWEVER

I always have been able to fit longs on mine but recently bough one FRAM what is EVEN LONGER than the long I use to fit and couldn't fit. will have to check PN on it though

Ya know, Im sitting here reading this guys report on Fram. I have used Fram since 1997 and have never had a problem. So, make it what you wish, but Im not seeing the problem with the "cheap cardboard" filter.

I might try a Purolator next round and see if I require some unknown benifit.

Ghoste

I think for me that given how close in price the alleged good filters are from the reportedly bad ones, I can daily bypass the Frams.  I just don't have a fierce brand loyalty to an oil filter.

lol...this thread is quite tame...I have a boat too and you wouldn't believe the discussions on 2 stoke outboard oil....

you will NEVER notice a huge difference by conventional inspections, but... and yes there is a but... you will notice a difference when the cardboard element inside the fram filter fails and gets sucked up into your oil pump thus causing your engine to become ruined.  $1-$2 more for a Wix filter will ensure / INSURE this will not happen.

Its up to you, 1-2 bux or 3000 bux later?

I picked up a 51515 Wix for 3.23. They had a cutaway of a fram ph8 and 51515 in a wix display box. I will give my extra ph8 to the trash gods.
