Weird to see one with a front bench. Cool though. Were the build sheets so torn that they were unreadable?

I've got no fender tag and no build sheets. Bummer ;)

Does anyone actually spend thousands restoring a Charger and leave the slant 6 in it?

I would.

yeah me too  :coolgleamA:

Me three if I could find one also

Add me to that list too. Back in the early '80's, my best friend bought a '73 from a dealership with a slant 6 and a 3spd on the floor. It was a old man's car that got traded in. He tossed some Cragar SS mags on it, with big fat tires, and most people thought it was a v8 car. With gas prices being what they are, what better way to have a cool ass car with good gas milage for cruising the back roads or longer trips with.

Sorry for the late reply (been busy with the holiday stuff), but I would fit into that crowd.  Here is some pictures of mine waiting for me for its turn at the resto knife (rusty underneath, so the remains of a 318 parts car will be used to fix it).  Since I already have plenty of other big block project Chargers to play with, this one will be brought back to stock as a trailer queen in due time.....

would be awesome to see when completed !! stock factory appearing :drool5: :yesnod: :2thumbs: :popcrn:

When i was younger, before i was really in to cars, my neighbor had a Charger or it may have been a Challenger with a slant 6.

Rayzor

My 68 was a slant auto car. Had a few cool pics of it on the old board when I built it up with a T04 turbo and webber carbs. But the six is long gone and a 440 is now under the hood. Cant compare yet as I cant seem to ever get the car done.

b5blue

Any photos of the old set-up? I would love to see the plumbing.

Rayzor

No, none left they went away with my old computer, The exhaust was a stainless header I built, basicly a log design. The carbs were in a blow threw aluminum box and the intercooler was from a volvo station wagon. It ran pretty hard into the 13 second range. After I burned 2 motors up I went with a procharger supercharger and it ran even better. Funny back then everyone except maybe chad magee and cuda ken thought I was nuts for keepin a six. Now I see this post and my six cylinder B body k member went to a scrap yard :eyes: Almost wish I had never started the swap as I have had to change everything from the rear end forward to run a 440 that Im not to sure I couldnt have beat with the six.

b5blue

The Slant six is a remarkable motor and was meant as an aluminum block originally (steel sleeved cylinders). The oddity of proper care for such a set-up was in part why it ended up loosing that weight saving advantage that is common practice now. A hyper-pack Feather Duster with an aluminum /-6 and the 4 speed overdrive aluminum tranny has been a car I would have loved to see someone build.

yeah  , remember one of the mopar mags done a build up of a aluminum  /6 motor a few years back :yesnod:

I have had 3 aluminum blocks come threw the shop over the years. They always leave as a bad cores to because of corrosion. I have yet to see a good rebuilder yet :'(

I was wandering how the Charger was doing, as I have been away off and on the last few years.  Yes, I can understand why you did the 440 setup, but your car would have been more unique with the /6 under the hood during race day.  It would be nice if a repop aluminum /6 block (and head) were readily avaliable, as I could potentially see a way that might take it to the next level (ie. hint- think how a ferrari engineer would before trying to toy with it).  Now with that idea, I might be the one people call nuts, but I would love to see if it could be done someday......

I could see that with the side draft webber set-up I found on ebay last week! At least that's what I think I saw.....I'm gonna go look again! I know he had Hyper Pak stuff too!

I have never seen even a bad one in the flesh!  :shruggy:

Don't feel bad, I have only ran across a few that were still together (non-parts cars).  You just don't see them at car shows, as most of the owners get hasseled with the /6 in place and some owners don't think of them as special enough to take them to a show.  The ones you do see usually have had a big block swap, I have found two of them like that at car shows (one did not know his was a /6 Charger orginally).  Out in the boonies (and junkyards), you usually find them parted out to fix other Chargers that people wanted to restore.  When they get to that shape, few will bother to fix them as it costs just as much to fix an RT in similar shape, eventhough that /6 Charger could be rarer overall.....

Crap I found what I saw, it was an intake for a Ford 2300 4 cyl. with side draft webbers, still potent as I had them on a TR 4 that screamed. He did have an Offy. 2X2bbl and a 4bbl for the 225 if any are interested PM me and I'll find the item #'s for them. 325.00 each is a good price, they appear new.

Rayzor

Did I ever mention what it was like trying to tune them webbers? I was found in a alley holding a vacumn gauge with torn clothes, dirty, and hooked badly on  Ibuprofen. Only now can I talk about it.

b5blue

They a nothing compared to S.U. oil dampened side draft's!  :smilielol:

Not if you already have/had a 440 426 400 383 340 and a 318. The slant six is a very good engine I would not even hesitate. Not all want a Charger just for pounding pavement, some cruise, B Bodys are excellent road cars in stock configuration. I've put 450-500 miles a day on mine and loved every minute. Nowadays the rarity of a low production Charger that did not get a transplant is very appealing. How many can there be left?

I agree with this. Evan though I love going fast, and burnouts, and an exhaust note that sounds like the apocolypse is upon us, I realize that other car guys have their own "dream cars" and they won't always be 440 Chargers. If everybody in the world wanted a Charger than I never would have been able to afford mine.

Oddly enough, I was thinking about engine builds, EFI and learning curves...thought hey I know diesels, maybe I should do a turbo gas  motor. Hey, why not a Turbo /6? it would bulge the eyes of the ricers...then I looked around and see I'd no way be the first.

How 'bout a 10-second Street Turbo /6 for fun...

Hm.

I wouldn't. Rare or not, I prefer big block power and of course the sound of a big block can't be beat. The good thing is you don't have to hack the car up to put the big block in it so it could easily be changed back to the leaning tower of power.
