I have filled my tank to the rim but the fuel guage only reads a little over 1/2 tank.......This is a new sending unit so I am not sure what else it could be.  Any thoughts?  Bad gauge?  Grounding issue?

take the sender unit wire off , & ground it out , with the key switched to the accessory position  or 1   , if gauge is working ok should shoot straight across to full or beyond , if not  could be grounding , or sender , wiring problem

Just 6T9 CHGR

New sending units need to be adjusted by bending float arma little at a time.  Trial & error ....total PITA but it works in the end...

If the sender is correct it should read about 10 ohms when full and about 23 ohms when half full. Be sure the ground strap between the body fuel line and the sender nipple is in place.

Pardon me but my karma just ran over your dogma.

There's a little bit of info./pics from trouble I had with mine that may help.  There was also several posts from others with similar problem.  I still don't think my full level needle position is accurate but it works good from about 3/4 down which is more important for me to know when its empty.  Just been working on other rebuilds of the car and haven't got back to it yet.  Good Luck with yours.

Thanks for the info.  Very helpful.

Also, check the "rake" of your car. I put a new sending unit in the tank with the float ---yes, bending is required with trial and error.

My angle of the car makes a big difference. Tire size (staggered) and torsion bar adjustment changed the gas guage reading instantly. Mine became more accurate as the car became more level.

I learned the hard way that that little piece between the sending unit and fuel line acts as a ground.....sure caused me headaches until i read a post here about it

Does anyone have a picture of the ground strap between the sending unit and the car? My gas gauge only reads 3/4 full when topped off.

Thanks,

I am pretty sure that mine is not there. I am going to get one and put that on.

I'm not saying you are getting that problem because a missed strap, just showing you what's that strap and its location

I didn't got problems with the VANS unit I got. working and reading right from the begining. Exact reading at Full. Still getting around 2 and a half gals when reading empty ( like a reserve ).

the only problem is that I rarelly miss the reading after a big bump or heavy cornering ( :D ). I guess point is loosing the rheostat contact. Fixable.
