Transporting bulky items across the US

When I used to ship off a 150lb transmission in a walmart tub I would use DHL.... was out around $60... now they are gone and UPS and Fedex charge by weight...
I'm going to California to pick up my Grandfathers shopsmith and a few other tools since he is giving up woodworking permanently due to health reasons and I need to transport them to Texas.
The tools and equipment, although they hold a great sentimental value, are worth less than $1,000 brand new altogether. My plan was to palatalize them and ship them. UPS wants well over $600 to ship this...
for example a shopsmith brand new costs $150 to ship when buying one online.

Anyone have some thoughts on a cheap way to get freight, bulk items, heavy items, or pallets halfway across the US?

Several year ago I bought an Olds fender and the shipping cost via Greyhouse bus from FL to CA was much cheaper.   Sorry, I don't have specific costs and/or weight limitations.

Oh, and visiting the bus station in Oakland was a priceless treat.

Greyhound is good up until 100lbs i believe.

Besides that i have had good luck with a freight company (will get name when i get home). I had 2 doors, innder fender, and k-frame shipped from AZ to NY for around 280ish.

I have an account with a logistics company that takes things anywhere in the US for prices that can't be beat... I shipped (4) 38" mud tires mounted on 22" rims on a pallet from Boston to CA for $200 last  year!!

I'd be willing to hook you up with their phone # and you are more than welcome to use my name if you want to give them a shot..

Other than that, Greyhouse is a decent option, but as Frank said, they limit the weight.

Let me know if I can help.

I would put an ad out on Uship. Think of it like the ebay of transportation.

I have heard a lot of good things about uship! You can find a shipper that may have hauled out there with an enclosed trailer and could bring the stuff back.

Good information, didn't know about UShip and I will have to look into it. Greyhound won't be an option I don't think, the heaviest item is well over 100 lbs, and the rest are large and bulky (3x3x5)ft

I would try and find out how the new ones are shipped for $150 and see if you can ride the same train.
Sure, you might not get exactly the same deal as they likely have a contract for volume, but you might get something close.
