vacation suggestions

Hey gang...
Was thinking of taking a little getaway right after Christmas, say, the 26th with my wife... Where are there some cool places in the States that one could fly into, get setup with a hotel with walking distance to all the cool things to see? I'm more inclined to go North since I could get some cold weather, possibly some snow (not having to drive is the cool part about it)... I was thinking of places like New York City, Boston, San Francisco, Alaska (Sitka), etc.....

New York was actually the first on my mind, especially after meeting you here in Houston at the AutoRama....  I guess it wouldn't matter which airport I flew into, there's always a way to get to the hotels... Hhow difficult is it to find a nice one downtown? I'd like to be next to the "sights", but accessible to you if we came... It would be cool to visit and as far as my wife driving in the '68, she wouldn't mind it at all, she really likes driving around in Dana with me.............

Fargo?  Well, I'm sure it would be far to go  and a long way to get there..............

Well, now here in Denver, we certainly can fulfill your requirements for cold weather and snow - plenty of that to go around. And at the same time, if you are adventuerous enough, you can do a LOT of skiing. I go to Vail from time to time and do my best to hurt myself good. But the scenery (ski bunnies included) is worth a few bruises, for sure. And at the same time, I know of a place close to me where this guy has a SHITLOAD of 2nd gen. Chargers and other classic Mopars, and will not even let you look at them. I will do a photo recon soon, I promise.

I would suggest NYC also but I wouldn't know where to tell you to stay that would be affordable if that's a concern.   There's lots to see and do if you don't mind a lot of walking or spending lots of cash.   

The hotels got some ridiculously high rates for the holidays in Manhatten with 2 day minimum stays.  I got tickets for the Black Crowes at MSG on NYE but so far I think we'll be taking the train home or jeeping it instead of staying the night. 

I've heard the rates are better in Jersey by the airport but that don't do me much good that night.

Troy, staying outside the city will be much cheaper, but anyway you look at it, a trip to NYC will be expensive. I am about 20 minutes from Manhattan, so if you and the family do decide to travel to NY, maybe we could catch up somewhere in NY. Maybe we could all get together (NY/NJ members) and get some lunch or something.

I might be able to find some time to try to get together with some of you, my wife & daughter are off that week & I should be able to take time off too. That's if you aren't afraid I might ruin your vacation.

Well to be honsest there isn't anything to see in the Indianpolis area that would bring people in, at least not in the middle of December. So I guess that rules out getting you up here so I can finally meet ya.

Montreal or Quebec City
Toronto
Whistler BC or Banff Alberta

Troy, I'd hold off on Sitka, AK as a winter destination.

If you're looking to go to Alaska for the winter, Anchorage would be a better idea.

Better in terms of location to other places to visit.

Plus, if you're really serious about a winter trip, and you did go to Anchorage/Alaska, February is the annual Fur Rendezvous.

Tons of stuff to do.

From parades, to ice racing (auto racing on glare ice), to auctions, to all manner of cool stuff.

That's also when the Iditarod starts.

I don't imagine you ski, coming from Houston, TX and all but if you do decide to cross the 49th, I will be in Banff, AB skiing between Christmas & New Years and we could try and hook up for dinner one night!

If you are not into skiing but do want to experience some winter activity, take another suggestion from Dodge Don & bad1032 and visit Quebec City, PQ.   Quaint city with historic architecture, cobble stone streets and some great restaurants, kinda like the Charleston, SC of the North!   Even though the CDN dollar is strong, your dollar will go a bit farther up here & the beer is better also.

If you don't want to cross the border, my suggestion would be San Francisco, CA.   One of the United States most interesting cities.   I have been there so many times on business and I still look forward to going as there are excellent restaurants, lots to see and do and when you want to take a break from the city, simply slip out to Sausalito, Sonoma or Napa Valley.   I brought my Wife with me once last year and she thought it was a beautiful city that was very romantic.   If you do decide on this, I can send you a list of great places to eat, romatic spots to have a drink and also some interesting things to see and do.   Oh yeah, stay at the Fairmont on the top of Knob Hill!

My guess is that the rates are up because of the holiday just like the $59 room at Carlisle is $159 when there's a car show weekend. My father is living up in MA now & went back to the city for a reunion over the summer. He said he tried one of those "name your price" sites & had a very good hotel in a nice area for under $100. I doubt you'd match that around Christmas time, but it may be worth a try.

An hour north of the City there's the little town of Santa Rosa where there's the "La Rosa" hotel a 5 min drive from the wine country and Napa calif,.. ten minutes from the coast and Bodega bay, where the movie the Birds was shot.. and an hour closer to the snow...

it's also right across the street from the coast railway museum which does these fantastic wine country tours,.. no driving..

Go on a ski trip to Vermont!   I recommend Burke Mountain, Bolton Resort, Mad River Glen, Sugarbush, Smuggler's Notch, and Jay Peak, just to name a few of the places I've skiied and loved.   Nothing like the winter wonderland of Vermont.   If skiiing isn't your thing- try showmachining on any of the "VAST" trail networks.
