I have a Texas bought 69 Charger that I was able to trace back to about 1978.  Texas records only go back to the late 70's/80's.  I am out of luck and off-course all the Chrysler records were lost in a fire.  Anyone else from Texas or other states have any luck tracing their cars historical lineage.

I did but it was because I had the original paperwork on the charger along with 2 original letters from the original owners.

I have actually talked to all 3 previous owners over the phone.

The original owner was surprised it was in Texas as it was bought in North Carolina, they moved to Tacoma, Wahsington, then it was sold to a doctor in Minnesota (charger was kepted in a climate dontrolled garage for 17 years) and then it was sold to the guy I bought it from who moved from Minnesota to Cedar Park, Texas!!

I guess I was just lucky.

yes actually i know who the original owner of my charger is. i bought it from him almost 9 years ago. i have the original window sticker and a ton of original dealer flyers and receipts he saved. he atually told me he never wanted to see the car again. it has never been restored and has around 35,000 original miles on it. all original interior including carpet like new shape... :yesnod: :yesnod:

I found the original owner of R/T SE due to some DMV registration problems...  He had moved to Montana so he was hard to locate, (but I have a friend that can locate people)...

Everything was awesome talking to him except that he told me in the 80's a wrecking yard had a '69 newly put-out in a side lot, and when he went back to get a MINT fender they had forked the car and it was smashed!  But Alas; I have found a MINTY fender for her...

In ON when purchasing a used vehicle you must purchase a Used Vehicle Information package from the Ministry of Transportation.  It costs $20.00 CDN and all you need to do is provide the VIN.  They will then give you a 2 page report that shows whether or not the vehicle has any liens on it, the current Red Book value, for tax and pricing purposes, as well as the previous owners and where and when they registered the vehicle.  My car, a '69, only went back as far as 1991.

I have the contact information and I am planning on calling to find out more information with regards to the history of the car and where I might be able to find the original 440.

I started a thread a few weeks back, asking for suggestions as to what type of questions to ask the previous owners and the only feedback I got was to ask "whose stinky panties were jammed under the back seat"!

I found a North Carolina inspection receipt in my 68 when I bought it in 96.  it was from 1982.  I sent 10 bucks to the NC dmv and they sent me copies of the rail shipping receipt from the factory to the dealer, and information on the first 3 owners.  I bought it from the 4th, so I spoke with him when I bought the car.  I actually talked to 2 or the 3 and they were shocked that I tracked them down.  the original owner was dead I think, so I could not talk to her, that's right, HER.  the 2nd owner told me that she was a secretary and bought the car new to get to work and back.

I'm sure mine is dead.  My Charger was owned by an old lady for 3 years, until she traded it in '76.  My uncle bought the car from the dealership she had bought it from.  My dad had it after him, and now I have it.

Bought mine frome a member on this board. He bought it from the guy, who was around 18 at that time who pick it up at the dealer ship back in 69. He bought a R/T too later on. After something went wrong with the trans he parked my Charger in a shed and left it for +12 years. Then this member bought both Chargers as a package deal. He sold me the the 69, he kept the R/T. Makes me 3rd owner. :yesnod:

I am EXTREMELY fortunate to be the son of the original owner of my 69.  I am even more fortunate to be the father of the third owner!! :icon_smile_big:

I bought my 68 R/T in Georgia from a guy who bought it in California. I have the CA title with the guys name that owned it in CA. Wrote a letter to him and either he is dead, does not live in the address listed on the title or does not want to be bothered. I thinking of contacting the CA DMV. Anyone has had any luck doing this in CA? If so which dept did you contact - how did you do it?

Mine had every vehicle Registration form from the day it was purchased in the glove box.  That makes things much easier but I did do some tracing to try to determine the # of owners not counting the original owners son who owned the car for a few years and only registered it for two and the guy who bought it with the intention of restoring and never got around too it, I am the third registered owner.

It was easy.... bought it from the original owner back in 1984. Have some of the original records; he gave me what he had, anyway, which wasn't a lot, but who knew back then???

I bought it from the original owner in 98. I have all of the paperwork. Window sticker, build sheet, bill of sale, cert card, owner's manual and even a receipt for the first tank of Premium put in the car at a station 2 blocks from the dealership. The car was all original just worn out. The only major component that had been changed out was the radiator.

I might have a copy of the original title for my car, i can trace it back to the 80's if i wanted for sure. I think im the legal third owner of the car, but probably the 5th. my car got into some trouble earlier in its life and exchanged hands a few times under the table i think.

I used to wonder about the history of ownership for most of the cars that I've had, or still have, but I don't bother too much anymore. Some of the cars I've owned have had paper work screwed up, like names erased on a title, so if I knew the previous owners I'd probably want to strangle them for being stupid. I am curious about my Satellite convertible because I supposedly bought it from the second owner in 1984, who supposedly bought it from the first owner, a woman who bought it new. I'd always wonder, but not enough to track someone down.

It seems that with the way some cars have been bought & sold over the years, you'd be meeting a lot of flippers who wouldn't care or even remember the car anyway.

I've had good luck and some not-so-good luck on this topic.

On my R/T, I have traced the owners back until the early 1980's.   The trail dead-ended when the "oldest" owner I talked to told me he bought the car from someone he had forgotten the name of, and he had kept no records/receipts.   The car was in pieces at the time at a car repair facility.   I called the owner of the shop (still in business) and he made it known that he had absolutely no recollection of the car, and no interest whatsoever in helping out in my search.   I have done the Texas DMV search thing, and it did give me the name that the "oldest" owner couldn't think of (Greg Cody), but I have not been able to locate the gentleman yet.   The records didn't go any further past that particular owner, and he was only listed as the "previous owner" with no address, etc.   I've been trying to do a search in the Dallas Morning News archives, for classified ads (just in case it traded hands that way), but they have a huge gap in their archives from 1978 - 85, which is right when I need to look.   I've tried contacting the Mopar clubs in the area, and posting on a few other local hot-rod forums from the DFW area, but I have come across no one who remembers the car.

The Daytona was a different story.   I posted a thread on the old D-C.com site about the discovery I was able to make on its ownership history.   I have talked with both the first, second and third owners of the car.   The fourth has passed away (he only owned the car for about 2 years, and did more damage to it than anything else), and then bought the car from the 5th owner.   Only the first and second owners ever drove the car, since it caught fire while #2 was going to work one day.   I was able to track the registration with the help of a P.I., since he apparently has some "friends" in the Missouri DMV.   Cost me $200 total, but it was well-worth it to find out the history of the car.   I'm still hoping that Owner #1 and #2 can scrounge around and find some vintage pictures of the car back in its heyday.   A big problem I had with the title search on the Daytona is the fact that Missouri registered the car as an XS car rather than an XX, from day one.   The first search attempt gave no results, since the State's computers had the wrong VIN.   (Incidentally, it appears that every single 500/Daytona was titled in the State of Missouri as an XS car, since I got a printout and was able to verify other Aero cars that had this same thing done to them).

Sometimes you get lucky, sometimes you don't.

Sadly, in Utah the DMV does not go back very far apparently on records and since many of these cars were sold on used car lots that's where I've gotten to dead ends.
I'm not sure how to go back very far if no records exist and nobody remembers the car.

The guy who originally sold me the GTX claims to know the original owner and all owners since although he doesn't know that I bought it back in '89 after selling it once in '85. This means that he doesn't know where it is now so.....

I did buy a '68 Charger R/T from a vacuum salesman in Idaho who took it in trade for a Hoover here in Utah.  Seems a lady whose boy never made it home traded it in 1979 and he gave me her address but I never approached her.

All I know about my Charger is that it was a white, 383 2bbl car built Dec 7th, 1968 - all  if memory serves, and I got it from a guy who brought it up from Arizona where it had been sitting for some time.
