I just got the 440 from a motorhome I am scrapping removed today. Heres the deal. This thing ran perfect when I drove it to my property 3 1/2 years ago. I don't want to damage it since I sold my other 440's What would you do for inspection and possible fire up of this engine. I did not see any evidence of mice. the dipstick went missing somewhere during the scrapping process so I can't just "check" the oil, however the dipstick tube was protected from the elements (bent upside down) however there were a few drips of water that leaked from the left side exhaust pipe (dual exhaust) when I raised the engine up to pull it. The engine was covered with the doghouse of the motorhome with the air cleaner on it but the sides of the engine from the exhaust manifolds down were exposed to two extremely heavy rainstorms, about 2-4 inches of rain each time in the past two weeks. What would you do to make sure you don't have any problems? Or wreckage?

The bugle sounds the charge begins. But on this battlefield no one wins.

Im assuming that the spark plugs were left in it. Any prep done before it sat or did you just turn it off and leave it alone? Any type of fuel stabilizer added? If not a carb rebuild is in order. Id suggest spraying penetrating oil in the cylinders to free it up. A small ring of rust will usually form on the cyl walls at the top piston ring, esp on the cylinders with open valves. Id really suggest pulling the heads and checking the cyl walls. Coat em in oil and then start to spin the crank just to free everything up. Then a basic tune up. Replace any rubber parts/hoses that are cracked and give it a shot.

I would also check the pan and reseal the engine before starting it. You never know what you will find in the bottom of the pan or the condition of the timing gears. It is not a big job while it is out but a pain once installed. You will also want to prime the engine while turning it over prior to firing up. Just my  :Twocents:.

O and replace all the freeze plugs with brass ones. Get a few cans of carb cleaner for when you get inside it. That stuff can help clean the inside to show you if you have any problems
