I'm thinking about buying a used home resistance training set but I'm not sure which direction to go. The only available space I have is in an upstairs bedroom and possibly my office downstairs. I like the idea of cables and weights but not the idea of how much one of those sets probably weighs. Between the plates and all the framework they're probably pushing 600 lbs. aren't they? And what about the Bowflex thing? I assume they weigh much less and are easier to move around. What would you folks recommend?

Crap, then I find this: http://www.dodgecharger.com/forum/index.php/topic,5756.0.html

NHCharger

I picked up a almost new BowFlex two years ago for $400.00.
Very simple compared to the ones with all the cables or the computerized ones.
Weighs about 150 lbs.
72 Charger- Base Model
68 Charger-R/T Clone
69 Charger Daytona clone
79 Lil Red Express - future money pit
88 Ramcharger 4x4- current money pit
55 Dodge Royal 2 door - wife's money pit
2014 RAM 2500HD Diesel

I told my wife she was getting fat.... I ran about 40lbs off.... just remember, they do eventually catch you, so this method of home exercise isn't for everyone.

Why not join a gym?  Then you are there and focused on working out.  When the gym is at home wont there be too many distractions?   :shruggy:

I've had several gym memberships and I just plain don't go. All I do is hand them $100-$200/year and then I go maybe five times and that's it. At first I really try but I just get so bored there I can't stick with it. I know my chances of sticking to a home workout aren't much better but by my math I figure if my wife and I spend our money on a used Bowflex instead of a gym membership we can at least sell it and get some of our money back if/when we don't use it. :shruggy:

Honestly Bull - I am at a similar spot. I have a weight set at my house and never used the damn thing. I have since gotten a gym membership and have started going every day -  it is addicting at times but honestly - the only way for it to work is to go WITH someone.  My friend and I started going and i have gotten into a routine -    that was the only way i managed to start going...    having soeone go with you (who does a similar work out) gives you someone to chat with and a spotter never hurts.     :Twocents:

That might work but only if the other guy was motivated because I'm just not. I enjoy walking and riding my bike outside and would actually rather do that in pouring rain than run on a treadmill indoors. But now I need some resistance training because cardio alone can't provide everything I need.

Personally,  if you buy buy used.... honestly I see many of them, that hardly if ever get used other than a clothes rack at peoples homes.

I REALLY suggest. Just making it part of your day. Got to the gym at X time everyday....

Clubs have a variety of cardio and weight equipment.. millions of dollars worth of equipment at most gyms......

I say go for the gym membership or buy used home equipment..

You can do resistance training by doing situps, push up, and may get youself a set of dumb bells, you can many different exercises with very little equipment.  :Twocents:

I completely agree, I stayed in better shape when I used to walk and run outside or play basketball with friends. The gym is just to artificial too me, the idea of getting on a treadmill for an hour sucks. I do much better doing outdoor activities. I got a gym membership this past summer and I never used it much. Plus I have to drive 20 minutes across town to get there. I cancelled it 2 weeks ago.

Going to the gym for the use of the equipment is only half the reason to go there.  the other reason is for the motivation...  :icon_smile_big:

Yes, that has been noted when I workout in the Twin Cities...... :scratchchin: :scratchchin: :2thumbs:

I've been a member of the same gym for 20 years, and I've gone no less than 5 days/week (except while I'm on vacation). It's become a part of life for me, and I can't imagine NOT going...  With that said, I also have a home gym setup where I can get a missed/extra workout in..  I'm not a huge fan of Bowflex style "home gyms". They are overpriced and you reach your plateau with them very quickly.

I agree with the others... Find something that works for you. Light equipment (dumb bells, etc..), elliptical machine, treadmill, recumbent bike, push ups, chin ups, an evening run/walk, etc.. And stick with it. If you aren't working out with someone at home than motivation will leave as quickly as the idea comes, and you'll be stuck with a $1000 clothes rack that you get pissed at every time you stub your toe on it..

If you've got your heart set on a Bowflex, hit Craigslist.. There are people there who paid $1000+ for their setups and are selling for $200-300 just to get the beasts out of their house.. Like my brother in law who bought the BEST setup Bowflex sells, used it twice and sold it a year later for $250.

Good luck with what ever you chose
