I need to find a good mechanic or she's going to Barrett-Jackson

I had the car out twice this year... Once was to take first in my class at the Mopar Alley show. I have been trying to find a good mechanic who knows a lot about Mopars especially '68-'70 B-bodies. I no longer what to go out to the garage and tinker and troubleshoot... I want to hand it off with a list of needs or clues and cut a check when it's finished.

At the momment the car is pinging under load and it has a noisy fan belt. Again I have attempted to troubleshoot at my friends encouragement... emptied gas tank and refilled with Union 76 premium, swaped out electronic box (noticed different plug style), haven't tried new distributor yet but checked gap. Again, this isn't what I want to do anymore.

Any suggestions? I turned down $30K for the car last year and I'm afraid that IF I did take it to Barrett-Jackson and put a price tag on her of $50K I might just sell her. I would rather keep the car but I need to drive her more!

Move the timing around a bit. Should help with the pinging.

whats the compression on the car and what fuel are you running? it could be pinging because the timing is off or because you have a fuel which is inadequate to your engines needs.

Big Lebowski

Try a dyno shop for a distributor curve wizard. Or if the problem is too much compression is from a steel head gasket, try the fatter blue fel-pro. head gaskets. :icon_smile_big:

10:1, but it hasn't been checked since I bought the car in 2000. I don't own a compression check tool. Fuel is ok.

If some pinging and a noisy belt is sending you over the edge, then maybe you should just sell.  I don't mean to sound like a wise ass, but if that's where you are at, then maybe it's best to move on.

if you want to get into some major surgery, you can get thicker head gaskets to lower the compression.  what are you currently running on timing right now?

Try running it with out the vacuum advance hooked up.

Already tried... And the car used to run excellent before. I have a bad disk in my neck and very little tools to work with. I NEED a mechanic. Any names and numbers near San Jose?

Yep, a good MOPAR mechanic that has the time to work on others cars is getting hard to find.
A lot of us could fix your problem in person, but over the internet it can be hard to diagnose
properly, plus it sounds like you have done the basics. I have my wife's all stock 68 RT Charger
440 magnum with the stock 10.1 comp at the point it only pings under full throttle and on
the freeway, so yours being a 4sp should be much easier to get dialed in. Other than a bad
timing chain witch is possible but not as likely, I would still tend to believe one of the things
you have already done is still not right there is only so many things it can be. Timing, carb,
ignition box, distributor itself or checking it.

We have a good Dyno shop in my area that a few friends of mine have gone to, they are not
mopar only but do great work and everyone of them was very pleased with all of there work, they
will change cams, carbs and what ever it takes.

So you only had the car a year when I took those pictures, Are you still trying to get that Bengal Charger??

Sounds like you've experienced what I'm going through... I have a lead on someone who has been working on old Chryslers. He may not be able to get around to my car for awhile but it's a start.

Nope, I gave up on the Bengal after the auction. It was sold again.
