I'd have to agree with your point that a lot of folks do not like the car, just because of it's name.  They cannot and will not get past that.

You're right.  A lot of folks just can't hang with the fact that the Charger name got slapped onto a four door.  I really feel sorry for those folks as they're the ones who are missing out on an outstanding ride that does everything well.  I've owned close to 200 cars and trucks over the years and driven many, many more.  Everything from musclecars to sports cars to economy cars to luxury cars to just about every imaginable kind of light truck.  The new Charger is at the top of the heap.  And as stated, previously, the extra pair of doors merely adds to the overall versatility of the car.

Thanks Troy!  I know I'm a little slow but at least I'm here now!

You know what I'd do if I owned that? I'd slap a stroked small block Mopar in there...you know, sorta like a lot of guys who put a Chebby engine in a tubbed Cuda or something, only the reverse. I've always wanted to do that. :D

BTW, cool story on that car. Too bad the guy's life went to hell over a female. :-\

Well, in all honesty, I've always had a soft spot for bowties so it'll have to stay bowtie powered.  Not only that, I'd never be able to build an equivalent Mopar small block ro the G.M. 454 stroker small block for what the G.M. motor costs.

And you're right, it's really sad what happened to the dude who originally built and raced the little purple Vega.  I never knew the guy but I feel his presence whenever I'm out in the car or even near it.

Oh, and that Pacer totally rocks!!!

I'm going to go on record here and state that I am one of the people that doesn't like the car.  My position is styling, which is subjective, and DCX reaction to the outcry.  I don't care if it has two doors or ten (although when it comes to a performance vehicle I truly don't need or want the added "benefit" of two extra doors  ;)), I just find the car incredibly unattractive.
That said, I find just as many people on this site constantly trying to convince me that it's the greatest automotive achievement since round wheels.  The fact is, most of us our passionate about cars and this one is a polarizer.  As long as no blood is spilled, it's good to debate it and both sides views are valid.

We haters are just more valid.

Hey, if it helps, my wife thinks the 2nd gen Chargers and especially the 69's are the ugliest thing to ever roll off a dealers lot.  She's in a club of about one, but all the same, she can state her case with all the conviction we've thrown around this topic and I still kind of like her so...

Dude you never fail to make me laugh!   Tonight, I almost sprayed my French Vanilla coffee all over the keyboard!

The lack of style you speak of, the 99 to 1 hate e-mails of the car, the car's impending doom upon release of the new Challenger and the car being a big dud are all legends in your own mind!   What part of the Charger NOT being in the same market segment as the Challenger and Mustang do you NOT get?   What's wrong with the buyer of a family car wanting something other than the plain vanilla that is usually the fare when it comes to family cars?   I really, really wish we could have had you strapped into the back seat of our Charger from here to Florida and back and from here to Oklahoma and all points in between.   What you would have observed (to your your utter horror I'm sure) is that mainstream America thinks the new Charger totally rocks.   It's the underwhelming minority out here that can't hang with the car.

Yup, you're right.   The new Challenger is VERY, VERY cool.   Do you REALLY think it was all of this alleged hate mail that brought it on?   Do you NOT think that there are actually real live living human beings at DCX who can't see what other vehicles are on the market and want to build something to compete in that market???   The problem is that when that market is NOT a bread and butter market, cars like the Challenger have to wait.   The fact that DCX is healthy and has done extremely well in getting the LX platofrm up and running and successful in the marketplace and that the LX platform allows the flexibility of building vehicles liek the Challenger have WAY, WAY more to do with the fact that the Challenger may see the light of day than all the emails you speak of.   Good God, I should have been an auto industry analyst!

Ok, two things.   I say the new Charger isn't that bad as a car, it is sort of cool, growing on me a little,  but it should not have four doors or it shouldn't be called a Charger.   That simple.

Here's why.     And I will make a point by something you just said.     Imagine Mustang comes out with a four door Mustang only, no two door option available.   People would be like, "WT heck???"     You know that is true.   Or a four door Trans Am or a four door Camaro only, no two door available (when the Camaro or TA were still made).     Come on, it would seem ridiculous to almost anyone.     A four door Charger only?     No two door?     There never was a four door Charger made at all originally.   It seems basically really ridiculous that they did that, just doesn't even make any sense.     And you say this above, " Do you NOT think that there are actually real live living human beings at DCX who can't see what other vehicles are on the market and want to build something to compete in that market???"      What you said is my whole problem with this.     THEY MADE THE CHARGER COMPETE WITH THE MARKET OF FOUR DOOR SEDANS, NOT MUSTANGS.     THE NEW CHARGER IS A FOUR DOOR SEDAN!!!   (And there is no Camaro or TA today, they could have replaced that whole market.)      Mustang has done it right, the Charger is pretty sad, as far as trying to re-create something in the spirit of the original car, if not a resemblance of some kind, which I guess is what I wanted.   Sorry, I like the car ok, just not that it is a four door car.     Sould have absolutely been a two door car, no four door models made.   Look at the cool cars that were also made four doors back in the day, Chevelles, Cutlass's, Impala's, Skylark, LaManns, '57 Chevy Bel Aire, not sure of the models, they aren't that cool, they are ok, but the two door is cooler, really.

edit:     I don't care that much, no hard feelings on anyone one bit for what kind of car they like, glad we can all debate Charger stuff, that's fun.   Welcome again, good luck with the cars, the Superbird restore and the Vega engine swap.     Somewhere on here is a video link to a video of pro stock drag cars doing some awesome wheelies.   You gonna get wheelie bars on that car?

Why would you want anything else?  Just give me a Charger and I'll be happy.

69_500

There is a big difference in trying to compare a 4 door Charger to a 4 door mustang or Camaro. For one a Charger was always a mid size car. A mustang and a camaro were always pony cars. So its not really a valid argument to say how upset people would be about a 4 door mustang. You should have compared it to a Chevelle, or a Fairlaine, or a Galaxy. But then again whould people be upset if they brought back the Chevelle name plate in a 4 door? I don't think so.

I personally love the new Charger. I love the fact that you can go down to your local Dodge dealership and order a V8 powered RWD car, that has up to 425 HP from the factory. For this you should be happy.

Danny pretty much covered it but let me add a little bit more to it.   As Danny said, with the Charger always being a mid sized model, wouldn't it make more sense to make the two door sport coupe you bring to market if your company is healthy and you think the market will bear it be a mid-sized car or a pony car as the new Challenger is?   The Charger filled a perfect target market in being exactly the car that it is.   It wears the name Charger exactly as it should but for a modern world.   It can haul all the peopke and cargo I need to haul quite comfortably and still be a sporty and fun car to drive with excellent handling and road manners and abundant power even with the V-6.   I kinda consider our '06 Charger to kinda be the modern day equivalent of my old '66 and '69 383 Chargers.   Awesome cars but not the super wazoo 440 and Hemi models.   We were THRILLED to be able to have the Charger in the market so as not to have to even stop at the Ford and Chevy dealers and look into a Chevy Impala or a Ford 500.   The Charger is in the same class but in it's standard V-6 SXT version BKOWS AWAY the Impala and the 500 in every imaginable way and THEN still has the 5.7 R/T and Daytona packages AND the top dog 6.1 Hemi SRT-8.   Charger in every sense of the word, just for a modern world.   Really, how many people would have bought a mid-size two door Charger?   Not nearly as many as buy Mustangs, Camaros, Firebirds and other pony cars.   The Challenger is the MUCH better choice to be the Mustang   fighter.   The Charger suits the world just fine the way it is.

Oh, and hey thanks for the welcome.   It is awesome to debate the new Charger here in a non-hostile environment.   And thanks for the kind words about the Bird and the Vega!

Just an off the wall question here John, but when you get the yellow Bird done are you going to add it to your picture? And if so, which car will be the middle car in the 3 car picture.

I'm looking forward to you posting more over here. To be quite honest there was only a couple of people who I ever chatter with from Moparts, you being one of them. For anyone who hasn't met John, a great individual, with a great collection of winged cars. Loves cars in general. Also sells video's of car shows, which I tend to purchase of shows that I can't make it to.

Danny, thanks for the kind words!   About that sig pic, yeah I was definitely planning a new pic with all three cars in it.   I'm not sure which cars are gonna be where but I would guess the two Birds flanking the Daytona in the middle but we'll have to see what wild and crazy ideas we come up with.   Maybe an ass-end shot of all three cars with smoke pouring out of the wheelwells of all three of em!
