I picked up a used 8 3/4 center section for my charger.  It looks good except the play detween the ring and pinion seems excessive like .015 the book says should be .008.  My question is do I readjust the gear lash to .008 or leave the used rear alone?

the book doesn't give a high/low specification?  or is .008 the high side of the spec.?
Remember the average response time to a 911 call is over 4 minutes.

The average response time of a 357 magnum is 1400 FPS.

I agree....there should be a minimum and maximum dimension there

OK The book says ".006 to .008--- I see about .015.. So the question is do I mess with the factory setup or leave it alone?

that's almost twice the allowable max tolerance.....i would fix it, unless you're not worried about replacing it if/when something catastrophic happens  :Twocents:

If the unit has been run a long time with the lash as it is, tightening it will create a new contact pattern which might wind up being noisy.
Pardon me but my karma just ran over your dogma.
