HI. Couple of questions from a hopefully soon to be charger owner. I am looking at a 69 and was wondering if the r/t is worth a decent amount more than an SE with same sized engine? (Both cars have replacement engines however the r/t originally had the 440 while the SE had a 318 or 383)  Also, what constituted an R/T other than the 440/426 and badges? Any other options that were part of the package? Finally, the car I am looking at has a b&m style auto shifter which seems to me would not have been original. Is that correct? There is no center console and only the shifter. Thanks!

All things being equal the RT is worth more than the SE even if the SE has had a larger engine transplanted.  The RT package was primarily a drivetrain one and said drivetrain options were all geared towards higher performance.  Things such as better brakes and suspension with only a 440 or Hemi as an engine.  The SE was a trim package and could be ordered on any model.  The B&M shifter is most definitely NOT a stock item and has been added by somebody.
Now as to which of two cars you are looking at may be worht more?   Well that is a slightly different question as car condition also plays an important role.

I assume you realize that the "440/426 badges" are signifying an actual 440 or 426 motor under the hood of the R/T cars.

The R/Ts are generally worth more than an SE.  But you won't get an SE car that has the same motor as an RT without that car also being an RT as well (yes, there were some RT/SE cars built).  A 440 or a 426 Hemi = an RT car.  There was no such thing as a non-RT Hemi or 440 Charger from the factory in 1969.

Another source of confusion is the Challenger RTs in relation to the Chargers.  When they started making Challys in 1970, the 383/4-barrels were classified as RTs as well as the 440 and Hemi cars.  But on Chargers, that same 383/4-barrel motor was not an RT car.  I guess they figured the slight weight reduction of the Challys (compared to Chargers) justified it.

If it pans out better as far as price and/or condition get the R/T....trust me.    :brickwall:   Ted

Buy the car thats in the best restorable condition, I would not worry about the vin. If both cars are pretty much the same condition, go with the R/T.  :Twocents:

An R/T (Rroad and Track) trumps S.E. (Special Edition) R/T being the heavy duty performance Package incl. heavier suspension while the S.E. was the '69 up Luxury Interior Package, leather seat faces, woodgrain dash, pedel dress up, light group, and deep dish wheel covers.
Curious as to colors and options, listing the fender codes of both cars (if avail.) would do alot to determine specifics.
and of course as had been stated over-all condition counts for alot.  :popcrn:

Thanks to everyone who has replied so far. I realize the SE was not supposed to have the 440 in it which was part of my concern for said car. Both seem to be in comparable condition. To date, I know more about the details of the SE restoration. Both need a little work. (i.e. as someone pointed out, the r&m style shifter in the R/T was not factory so I would need to find a center console and shifter). The R/T also has some extras that were not stock and quite frankly have me a little worried as to how hard it may have been driven. Things like driveshaft loop, 4 link suspension in rear, fuel cell in trunk, subframe connectors, etc. Also is geared low. The fuel cell may have been necessary to fit the suspension. Don't know yet but going to try and get some answers. The R/T has about 15000 miles since motor and trans rebuild and is roughly $1500 more than the SE.

The R/T sounds like a former race car to me...   :Twocents:
