Did 2nd Gen Chargers w/ A/C have any sort of Idle Compensator?

Sorry not sure exactly where this goes in the forms. Mods feel free to move :)

Wondering if 2nd Gen chargers with Air Conditioning had any sort of Idle Compensation mechanism. I'm using the newer Sanden compressors, but even those will bog the car a bit when sitting at idle. Most cars had some sort of electronic doohickey (that's a technical term) that would engage the idle speed up where power was applied.

If not - was the base idle speed on A/C cars just a little higher? Or did they just deal with the bog.

Thanks!

yes it ritchens the mixture  at idle when the A/C is on  ..rare to get hold of i believe   part numbers end with SA  for a automatic & aircon .... have got most , if not all part numbers somewhere  :scratchchin:

It is an idle solenoid. Here is a shot of it on my '70. It bumps up the idle when you turn on the A/C, although you really don't notice it working.
6-pack cars also had them as well, although I'm not sure of the purpose on 6-pack cars.

I thought somebody was reproducing these??  :shruggy:

That solenoid looks just like ones that were used on some ford vehicles I used to own.  I bet that same solenoid is used on lots of different Mopar products.  I wonder if you would need one if you have changed over to a Sanden Compressor since the loading from those is quite a bit less than it would be for the old Chrysler v-compressor.  I will be using a Holly style carb on my 440 so I would need one that would work with it.  Of course, others would need one that would work with a Carter/Edelbrock carb.

Any idle solenoid found on sixties/seventies muscle Mopars was to prevent dieseling on shutdown, none were used to kick the idle up for A/C.

I always set the idle in gear with the A/C running.
Pardon me but my karma just ran over your dogma.

agreed. set your idle based on what john said and you're good to go. especially if you live where it's hot like i do. i only NOT use the a/c in my charger 1-2 months a year.

Thanks everyone. I never saw them in any of the assembly manuals so I wasn't sure. I'll reset the idle with A/C on and be good to go.

Alternatively, Edelbrock does make Idle Compensator that works with their carbs - i assume it would work with any Carter as well. I guess I could try that as I use AC pretty infreqently...

mopar guys can consider themselves lucky, the pontiac guys used a vacuum actuated idle compensator, of which, I was unable to locate.  I found one just like Albert found above in the eddy catalog and the guy who needed it, stated with an affirmation of.. "no" on that one.
