I have a 1968 dodge charger 318 and my second gear went out, time for a rebuild i guess. How hard are these things to rebuild? and what rebuild kits would you guys recommend? i want it to last, and my 318 build will be puting out 350hp so i might need a beefier rebuild kit  :shruggy:

Have you done any automatics before ?

904's are one of the easiest to rebuild, and usually still the "first" one trade schools let an Apprentice get their feet wet,
that said,
If you've never done an Auto, don't do it without a trained eye looking over your shoulder.

If ya lost 2nd, ya probably just cooked the front band, but time for re-winde anyways.

i have rebuilt an automatic before, but it was in my auto class about a year ago and it was a automatic from a mid 80's mustang. I have never opened up a 904 before so i dont really know what im dealing with. Should i just replace the front band? or should i just go with a complete rebuild?

I've rebuilt a 727 first, then a C4, then a 904 in my garage.  The FSM is all I used.  I thought they were easy.  The 904 I rebuilt was my Grandmother's.  It broke a few months after I rebuilt it.  I took the pan off and found the rear band adjuster bolt broke and backed out.  I used a torque wrench on it, so it wasn't overtorqued.  A trip to the junk yard for a new one, and it was fine.  The 727 I did was mine from a junk yard, and the rear band broke at the anchor.  Sometimes the servo piston cracks or the strut breaks, but that's usually on beefed up transmissions.  If your band is broken, the front pump needs to come off to access it.
