Should I put a HD Ammeter from a 72 Coronet Police Car in my 73?

I scored what I've been looking for forever and right near my home. I got a complete standard gauge cluster from a 72 Dodge Coronet 400-4BBL Highway Patrol Car. The cluster was real clean and uncut even with an OEM AM Radio that probably doesn't work. There is something rolling around inside it but it doesn't matter. I got it all for $80. It was the last useable thing on the car. I got the Certified Speedometer eventhough it still says 120MPH like the Standard one in my 73 Charger it still will look cool with the words "Certified Speedometer" on the top. It didn't have a clock amazingly but I've already got an NOS one. It did have a HD Ammeter that says -80 and +80. There was some massive wires connecting to the ammeter probably like 10 gauge. Should I put this in place of my original Ammeter or just leave my original? I know this police car probably had that Leece Neville 100AMP alternator but my Charger with a 400 only has the common 60AMP. Is there a way to adjust the mileage on this speedometer to match my original mileage?

yes there is a way to adjust the mileage...      it requires removing the number spools - separating them off the splined shaft - then turning them to the appropriate numbers...    a delicate process but it is possible...   I have done it many times for people who are replacing speedos and what not.

WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOW... NEVER HAD SEEN ONE OF THOSE!!! I'm jelous now LOL

nothing wrong using that ammeter, simply that needle will move less with low charge/discharge process due the "compressed" reading.

about spedo, you can use a dremmel too to make it spin quick.

I just left the mileage how it was. I don't want to risk breaking anything. There's no telling the speedometer that was in my car was original anyway. I just left the original Ammeter in too so I guess I'll just sell the HD Ammeter.

I might hang onto it and put it on later. I mainly wanted the Certified Speedometer. I've never seen any of those speedometers or ammeters at the Nationals or on EBAY so I may just hang onto the ammeter. I was looking over EBAY trying to find one and I couldn't find anything like it. So I will probably just package it up nicely and label it and put it on my shelf until I decide to put it in. I guess it would be pretty cool to make the Standard Gauge cluster look a little more sporty with the Certified Speedometer, this HD ammeter, and my NOS clock and I have the wood trim bezel instead of the silver one. But I already assembled everything back with the new speedometer in and I don't want to do it again for awhile. I haven't even seen many Coronet or Satellite Cop cars being done anymore or any for sale on EBAY. I guess most people who have a real one are making a Dukes of Hazzard cop car but most of the ones I've seen at the shows didn't have the gauge package like this one. The engine and trans out of this 72 Coronet cop car was long gone and all the coolers that I wanted were too. For some reason the dash was the only useable thing still in the car and it was nice.

did the cop car have the oil pressure gauge where the clock goes? if so, which wire goes to it?

Nacho-RT74

oil pressure wire should it be gray coming from sender, and would need to splice a wire from the blue one.

Did exist standart clusters with oil gauge on police cars ?.

BTW couldn't use same sender, will need to change the sender for the gauge kind instead the bulb kind

It actually did not have the oil gauge just the oil light like all the standard clusters I've seen. It only had the certified speedometer and this HD ammeter. The wires going to the ammeter were a lot fatter than on my Charger now because of the bigger alternator which was gone too. I think it is Auto Instruments that sells a sending unit that you can hook up to the original Oil light and you can also hook up to a gauge. I'll probably buy one of those.

some police cars had the standard cluster, with an oil pressure gauge located where the clock goes, for 73 the p/n is 3740166. I wish I had a camera to post a pic, but I have an nos gauge, still in the box. I am hoping to someday find a speedometer. I think that a 140 mph was available, but as far as I know, thats a rumor.

PLEASE... POST A PIC WHEN YOU ARE ABLE!!!

BTW, I'm hopping to get a 240 KMH speedo someday ( rallye cluster ). All cars ( some really weirds 74 Coronets ) I have seen, owner is not interested on make a trade just for teh speedo :brickwall:

In mostly of cases speedos are not even working, sure because damaged speedo wire, so THEY REALLY DON'T CARE about.
