Well with all of the bad economic news going on, I thought I would share some good news with you guys/gals.  The industrial chemical sector has been taking a beating for a while with mass layoffs and most of the state colleges have hiring freezes in place, which makes just starting out in my field pretty tough unless you already have experience.  To make matters worse, most of the postdoc research/teaching positions were taken up by jobless chemists here in the US who had a couple of years of experience already under their belts and international applicants with special skills. :brickwall:  After filling out countless job applications and going to some interviews (kept getting the line "you were our second pick for the job" later on when they made their decisions), I finally got one in my area. :2thumbs:  Late last week I was offered a full-time teaching position with a local community college starting in the fall and summer teaching starting next month.  They were looking for a Ph.D. level chemist to join their faculty to help buildup the science department more.  It is a nice school and I will enjoy working there.  It was a long haul to land this job since I graduated last May, but it finally happened for me when I really needed it to.  For those out there that are struggling, I feel for you and don't give up hope even though it seems like things are stacked against you......

ME too.  :yesnod: but my spouse and i were at our alma mater this past Saturday for a night of celebrating our 10 year aniversary from graduating.  We stayed out till bar time and got into our hotel bed by 3:40am.  The next day was tough and i'm still on recovery, that lifestyle is better left to the 20's age group.  We're good now for another 10 years..

Life isn't Father Knows Best anymore, it's a kick in the face on a saturday night with a steel toed grip kodiak work boot and a trip to the hospital all bloodied and bashed.....for reconstructive surgery. But, what doesn't kill us, makes us stronger, right?

Thanks everyone, I am still beaming from the news!  In a way, it really has not fully sunk in that I will be a college professor so soon.  After talking to a fellow MU classmate, I am the first one in my chemistry graduating class to obtain that distinction, as everyone else is either working as a postdoc in industry/college or teaching at a private high school.  As for teaching, it is in my blood (both my mother and sister are school teachers).  I really enjoyed teaching chemistry labs at both USD and MU, so this should be a continuation of that hopefully, just with more lecture time and responsibilities to get done (with better pay of course ;)).  The nice thing about this job is that I qualify for a full benefits package from the college, something a postdoc or industrial job does not always have available.  Plus, education positions tend to have more stability in hard economic times, a friend in industry pointed out to me recently after he was laid off......

I lost the total count on my job applications, but I remember that it was over 300 by the time I stopped.  It was literally a job to find all of the information on available jobs and then fill/send out the application forms to each one, not to mention rewriting cover letters and resumes to fit each application....

Hang in there Brock, it will come.  I was feeling quite depressed (and stressed) the last few months due to this situation, so don't feel alone.  If you need any resume/cover letter advice, let me know and I will try to help you with what I learned.....
