I would get a TDI no problem. Nothing like getting 45-50 mpg but I would be a little worried about the price of diesel. However, I saw it at $2.17/gal yesterday and was very surprised.

The glow plugs are right next to the spark plugs. :D

I generally stay the hell away from any volks made after 1987, but that's just me. I won't even work on them unless it's something ridiculously easy like airing up the tires, but even then...good luck.

Bull, I think you might be incorrect on this one. I believe they are next to the Flux Capacitor.  ;)

You should like your TDI. My buddy has one that runs on old fryer grease. It offsets his poor mileage in his Viper.

Make sure when you replace the flux capacitor, it's rated at 1.21 jigawatts.   The imported crap from China doesn't have enough power for a classic VW.

While you're at the parts store, don't forget a 710 cap.  The flux capacity won't circulate properly without it.

Good luck.

TheGhost

And, while you're at the parts store, don't forget to stock up on blinker fluid.  You don't want to run out of that.  Ask me how I know. :brickwall:

Oh crap, bone dry tank?

You probably need to reprime the engine. When a diesel runs dry, it can't pull fuel again, until you prime it. :P :P
My bro had to do that to a tractor we had. It really sucks, and each vehicle has a different way to do it... :brickwall:

EDIT: I looked at the pic mikepmcs posted, and your engine isn't common rail. It is going to have to be reprimed. :-\

I would still get glowplugs because they go bad anyway. :yesnod:

when we pulled the old filter out we tried turning over the engine (check the pump) and gas was moving through the lines so i guess not bone dry but it was damn close
new plugs going in tmr...
this car is too much work...  :rotz:

take a can of ether or brake clean.  spray it in the intake. then crank. if the engine is mechanically sound it will run for a bit.

doing this saves the battery and starter from burning out while priming the fuel system.

don't waste you time with the glow plugs. stick a rag in the tailpipe. this will keep the air in the cylinders longer, gives more heat to the combustion. beside, those plugs are a bitch to get to, and i am assuming that you've never worked on one of these cars before. judging by you questions.

I would change the glow plugs, they are not all that difficult to change. It's just the one behind the pump that sucks, the rest are rather easy on those VW's. Or you can have a garage do it for you, they should be able to do it while you wait.
