engine start's when it shouldnt

My grandson has a 74 charger with a problem,,,,,with ign,key in off position,,turn key one position forward, which should be for acc, but!! the starter engauges, and motor starts,starter will keep runing untill key is back to off position. Wher does grandpa start looking

I'd say grampa should start looking at the ignition switch, and harness...

One notch foward should be run (normal operating position)   ACC. is one notch backward.

Starter is momentary second notch forward. Sounds like a ignition switch or wiring problem.

Did it work ok ,then recently start acting this way?


Couple of ideas that are easier than the ignition switch:

Look at the fuse block under the dash. Look for added wires someone has added improperly.

Look at the starter relay near the brake booster. look for improper wiring.

I,, stand corrected on position  of switch.  Also I belive you are right,just from a quick look,,someone has,,mickey moused the wiring around the fuse box,,,the starter relay looks undisterbed.   Will see what can find. Got to keep these 17yr old movin. THANKS for the help.
