Driveshaft Safety Loop Measurement???

Hello,

I would like to fab up my drive shaft safety loop for my 68 prior to priming the bottom of the car. I have added frame connectors and am going to weld plates to each side the same way as Hemidoug did on his car. Can somebody provide me with a measurement of how far back from the transmission x-member to the loop? I do not have access to my trans mount and tranny at the moment so I cannot get a measurement at the moment. I will be running a A933 4 speed. Can somebody also supply a measurement for a Tremec as well as I can see myself going this route eventually and may as well take care of everything in one fell swoop before priming!

Thanks in advance for all of your help!

Cheers,

James, the 833 vs tremec DS loop location will not be the same....the tailshaft yoke is in different locations. To be "legal" the loop must be within 6in of the yoke or it will not pass tech.  :yesnod:

I used the US Cartool safety loop on mine and it attaches to the trans crossmember so there's no drilling into the floorpans. Unfortunately this DS loop won't work with a TKO Box.

Another option would be fabbing up a safety loop like Hemi Doug did for his 69. The loop is attached to tabs that are welded to the frame connectors. If you needed to relocate the loop it would only be a matter of welding on a second set of tabs and moving the loop backwards. The TKO is longer than the stock 833 so this relocation mod would have to be done when making the swap.

Here's Doug's thread with lots of excellent pics : http://www.dodgecharger.com/forum/index.php/topic,41726.0.html

Hello Ron,

Thanks for the info. I understand this and was going to weld on both sets of tabs so I could get the bottom painted and not have to revisit and weld later. I just need to know the distance from the trans x-member to the placement of both loops so I can install them.

Cheers,

James, pm member Brian Shaunnesy...he has a TKO 5spd in his sweet 69. Perhaps he can get you a measurement.

I can get you a stock measurement this coming w/e when i go out to work on my 68. It's stored 30 miles away at a buddy's shop. Mine has a 727 but the crossmember > yoke dimensions will be the same as a 4 spd.

I am not sure about the NHRA rules, or IHRA for that matter, but all the circle track stock cars
I ever did required a driveshaft safety loop within 6 inches of a U-joint.     :coolgleamA:
Nothing to see here folks, its just a Bluesmobile

NHRA is the same. Unfortunately my car is in parts scattered all over two different shops.

PS I installed your torque boxes and they look great! Cheers,
