69 Charger Horn Relay

When looking through my part bags (from my disassemble some 15 years ago) I found my horns but no relay?  My engine wiring harness is long gone so I consulted the engine compartment wiring diagram from my manual and it shows a horn relay but every wire connected to it has the double dash symbol for Coronet circuits only...???

I've done a search and seen pictures of horn relays in Chargers but I don't always know what year.

So - Does may car have one?  - Does it need one?

Any insight would be helpful.

So does that mean I should put one in and wire it up as my manual shows for Coronet only..???

I know what your thinkig "just get a new engine harness".  My car is is more on the custom side so I am trying to hide the wiring and keep the engine compartment as "clean" looking as possible.

So if I isolate the horns from the chassis, run a hot wire to their tabs, and use the horn button as the ground it should work, no?

Thanks

The pic I posted is of MY Charger and it is the way it is supposed to be.

I'm not sure about 69's but on my 68 the relay is bolted onto the alternator right above the bolt that you use to tension the alternator. I have no idea if thats the stock location, but thats where it was on my car when i got it.

My 69 is in the same place as Brian's 68.
This car was sold many years ago to somebody in Wisconsin. I now am retired and living in Florida.

Nope, that is not the stock location. The pic that 1hot68 posted was for 68,69 model.

OK - so I do need a horn relay - thanks everyone.

Now how do I wire it?

I stole this from another thread, and as you can see - all the wires going to the Horn Relay are for Coronet Circuits Only - however from 1H68's photo the wire color seems to match the wiring diagram for the Coronet.

I would wire it as such - but it doesn't make sense to me that both the Dark Green wire that feeds the horns from the relay gets connetcted to the "L" position on the firewall bulkhead connector ALONG WITH the black ground wire from the horn relay.  Inside the car the "L" is only one wire that goes to steering column plug (which I have to assume is the ground to make the whole think work)..??

What does make sense to me is to not run the H2-16DGN/R*(the only one that is not marked for Coronet Only) wire from the horn to the "L" postion on the firewall connector - and connect up everything else. (so I'm probably just reading the wiring key wrong).

Please let me know if I'm off base here.

Thanks

I'm totally agree with you... the wire H2-16DGN/R* simply doesn have any sense there.

On my car with relay INSIDE the cab, the green traced red wire drives the horn source but already converted into positive signal coming from inside

However pic posted by 1hot68 shows the wire there  :shruggy:

I can't imagine two diferent pole signals linked somehow

1H68 - let me ask you this?

Do you have both the green and black wire going into the "L" position on the bulkhead connector?

Thanks

Yup - Same on all B-Bodies of that period.

HAHAHA...

WELL 1HOT68 ( or anyone )... You can check directly on plug for both wires arriving to same terminal to the bulkhead ;)

How about this?

I can't see the second horn in your picture - so do BOTH horns have 2 green wires attached to them?

Actually, according to the wiring diagram - one of them should have 3!

The lower wire (as pictured) is the ground input from the steering wheel switch.

The middle wire is the 12+ input. (hot)

The upper wire is 12+ output to the horns via the green wire that piggy backs both horns.

yeah, thats the key, but why on diagram shows the green wire spliced also to bulkhead... and why the second splice from the second horn :shruggy: what is on your pic and is on diagram getting back to bulkhead.

Sometimes you need to ignore those diagrams and look to the real world for the RIGHT answers.

Oh, I detailed better and the yellow box what DID LOOK TO ME like a splice, is maybe a curved wire still going to the second horn. I thought we had one splice ( red box ) then a SECOND splice ( yellow box ) like it was already on second horn, and then running to somewhere else ;)

so is simply I was looking at wrong.
