K&K Charger @ Talladega

I found this photo on ebay.  Is it the same car that is in the Talladega Museum?  From what it looks like, it appears to possibly have a '70 frontend on the car.  Does anyone know the real story behind the car in the museum?

The K & K car in the Talladega museum is the original superspeedway car.  I took a bunch of photos, measurements, adn sketches for "Highbanked Hauler" on this board when he was looking at building a clone.  The car inthe pic is the "short track" car, run in 70, 71, and 72, hence the larger wheel openings to minimize tires being cut down from the "frammin and bammin."  The pic may have been taken during a test, as that looks like Rockingham, but that car would not have been used there, either the Daytona(69/70), or the 3rd gen style (71-4) would have run on that track.  From the style of the numbers, that shot is either 1971 or 72.

It says 1971 Short track car and that it is a '69 model even though it appears more like a '70 model.  I'd like to get a nice collection of these type of pictures started.  I just love old Nascar photos.

The photo of Isaac's short track car is from Dover Delaware.   You can tell it is Dover by looking at the back side of the pit wall.     

There is a photo I saw last year at Monster Mopar showing the 1970 K & K fleet outside the shop at Charlotte Motor Speedway.    In that photo, there are something like three Daytonas, a couple of 69 Charger 500s and a 70 Charger.    So they had a steady rotation of cars to use.   As to exactly which car did what and when, it can be tough to pin things down because of the number of cars they had.     

I can't say I know the real history of the standard body '69 Charger in the Talladega museum.   It's a older looking chassis.    Why a fully funded team would retain a pre-1968 chassis like this doesn't make sense to me.

I disagree--that crazy green, purple and red scheme is one of my all time favorites.  not that the car doesn't look kick ass now--

Man, that would make a hell of a cool car to build a replica.     




I probably couldn't resist the temptation to give it a '69 front clip though. 

And maybe square off the wheelwells just a little bit more than in this pic.  I like it better how the early red C500/Daytona wind tunnel mule had them.  (I think that particular car started out as the 1968 "2+2" lowered chassis before it became the wind tunnel car?)   Its wheelwells were still heavily cut higher than stock too, but they resembled the stock wheelwell shape a little bit more than the fully rounded ones.

Could you send me more pictures of the 97 car?  How far were the modifications taken?  Does it still have the stock engine bay?

Look at the distance of the top of the fender well on the K&K car compared to the previous pic. stance really changes things. As for the 2x2 the rear used different spring mount locations and lowereing blocks. I am working on my nascar car now and am finding out old tricks they used everyday. Cotton owens is full of very helpfull and good information.

Hey Howie.  I would love to see more pictures of your car too.  I figure... if I'm gonna build a vintage stock car replica... then it needs to be accurate.  I believe the stance will be one of the most important things on getting the right look.
