Go big or go home! Sounds like a good plan!   I think they need to roll out the Enola Gay from retirement and take care of the problem in about 20 seconds.

Hmmmm....too close to home.
My wife is being deployed to Kandahar Afghanistan next month. It's her second time going there.
I'm on the chopping block as well. Likely will be heading there shortly after her return.

Unfortunately, the US Military has already begun the process of asking the military vehicle OEM's for a lighter version of the MRAP (Mine Resistant Ambush Protected) vehicle that the USMC were all over a couple of years ago.  Companies like BAE, Force Protection, General Dynamics and International sold thousands of these vehicles, all built at a moments notice.  Their prototypes are now in the hands of the US Military for testing.

These MRAP's were big, strong with a good survivability rate against the IED's (Improvised Explosive Devices) and worked well in the infrastructure in Iraq (re: roads & highways) however they are not suitable for the donkey trails in Afghanistan as they are not very agile or quick.

So, the US Military sent out an RFQ for the M-ATV (MRAP - All Terrain Vehicle).  This vehicle will be similar to the MRAP, only smaller, faster and much more agile, a good fit for the terrain in Afghanistan.

The pics:

LAV
Cougar after hitting an IED - everyone survived - this vehicle was blown up in the air, spun around 180* and the engine was blown 50' away

The problem with trying to "bomb it back to the stone age" is that Afghanistan never really left it in the first place.

I'm not even trying to be funny.  It's pretty close to the truth compared to the world we're coming from.  UBL picked a hiding spot that's too sparsely populated to betray his movements and too rocky & barren us to try to threaten.

Close to home for me too - I was there in 05-06 in Kandahar, and my brother is a Tank gunner with Lord Strathcona's Horse (RC) and will be going over next roto.
