You can make your own fab printer..

You need to be able to "program" the part in though - no scanner in this one. I imagine it could be done though.

rrrf.org is another good site for this kind of stuff.

A good machinist with one of those setups in their shop and a 5-axis CNC could make some serious money on custom or reproduction parts...

I had seen a little on one of these before, but I had NO idea they could create assemblies of components. :o That is truly amazing.

Absolutely amazing.  Great clip.  I can't believe it makes parts that move from a part not taken apart?
This car was sold many years ago to somebody in Wisconsin. I now am retired and living in Florida.

I want to scan all my toys!!!!

Charger_Fan

Wow, that's a cool thing!

BTW, I think they already have plastic Megan Foxes...or maybe they're rubber? :D

The Aquamax...yes, this bike spent 2 nights underwater one weekend. (Not my doing), but it gained the name, and has since become pseudo-famous. :)

DodgeByDave

I wonder if Leno's mechanics are furiously scanning every nook and cranny of his toy land?

Of course, I would be, but do we really need nylon Daytonai sitting around?

I would order in advance, just saying :2thumbs:

Great clip.  Amazing machine.

I've wanted to get a 3D scan of a '69 Charger body for years.  Never mind building a new one full scale, I just want some miniature models of the cars that actually look right for once.

gtx6970

I'm not sure I see the point. You have a metal part, scan it to make it in plastic  then you scan that and make it in metal ??????

why not just scan the original part into the pc for a 3d image and use it for a blueprint to tool from

Tilar

The plastic one can be used to make a mold for your new part.

I would think that you could also make a mold off of the original metal one as well. I agree Bill, if you can make a 3D model of it for the computer to do in plastic, then you should be able to CNC machine one out of metal as well with the same measurements.

I think the primary advantage of this machine is that it is a smaller, quieter piece of equipment. Also probably a hell of a lot cheaper. The "printers" can be as little as $14,000. I don't think you can even come close to that price with a 5-axis machine. Yes you'll still need a metal shop to reproduce the final piece but at least with this you can make as many masters as you need at less cost. You wouldn't need a big footprint or shop for it, it's no bigger than a copier. They can also be used to build architectural models too. Imagine being able to upload a design to this instead of hiring a model builder. Turnaround is much quicker and if something breaks, just crank out a new one.
