Cut out rear window glass?

What do you experienced resto guys use to cut out the rear window?

Is this a good tool?  do you cut it from the inside or outside?

I wouldn't call myself an experienced resto guy however, I used a wire to cut out my back glass.  Music wire such as piano wire or a guitar string wrapped around a couple of screwdrivers did the trick.  Slow and steady and it was like a hot knife through butter.

like he said use it from the outside and try to keep the blade flat as you pull.

Mike I did see the wire tool as well...Im assuming you need a long piece to work both halves from outside the car?

I might pick up that tool (cheap enough)

I would also assume I would have to tape the crap out of the paint/vinyl top for fear of slipping correct?

yes cover the exposed areas if you want, its not as bad as you would think unless it slips, the wire method works as well but its alot easier if you have a friend helping, with the knife blade cuuter you can do it by yourself.

You have less chance of doing any damage with the wire. Harbor freight has one cheap. The wire is cable strand like and saws the sealer as well.

Chris , The pull knife you've shown will work great for cutting out your back glass. In this case it is used from outside.

I prefer the tool pictured.  It works great.  Just be very careful.  It will chip the edge of the glass if you get carried away.  Take you time and keep the blade parallel with the glass.

I had help, long wire and patience.  Had the knife handy in case we ran into trouble but did not need it.

I went to Lowes and bought a roll of small gauge picture hanging wire.  Tied each end around a piece of dowel and my wife and I had my window out in about an hour.  The wire tends to break because it's so small but we just kept wrapping it around the dowels and kept on cutting.  A little sawing action is required.  Take it slow and the person on the outside has to be careful not to mess with the car paint etc. 

The wire was a smooth wire that didn't chip the glass like braided wire.

you can use a windshield knife on a back glass. but you have to keep  as far from the glass as possible. keep the knife blade right down on the pinchweld and up against the body away from the glass if you tip the knife and nick the glass to hard it will explode. personally i like piano wire.  you can keep the wire way from the glass by holding a plastic blade on the wire and saw through the seal  you may break the wire alot but you seldom break the glass

Still haven't attempted to remove it yet.....will update on how it comes out....literally
