Engine Idenfication

How do you tell the difference between a 2000 318 and a 360? A mechanic friend of mine is working on the pickup with a junk yard motor in it. He is having issues with the computer. It possible he has mismatched parts in it. With the engine in the truck how can he know if its a 318 or a 360. Thanks

The engine number is stamped in the front of the block just below the head, the third character will ID the displacement...example 0M5.9LTXXXXXXXXXXXX is a 360.
