Alright, about to install my cam and the rest of my top end.

I have the #1 piston at TDC.

Is this the correct following procedure?

Lube camshaft really well
Slide it in
Attach upper timing gear
Rotate cam until dot is at 6 0'clock position
Install lower timing gear so that dot is at 12 o'clock position/ install chain
Install cover
Lube face of lifters well and slide them into bores
Install pushrods and rocker assemblies
Install valley pan/ gasket/ silicone

I allways have been doubts about the dots ligning up... I allways have ligned up face to face but ALLWAYS have to rotate the distributor rotor 180º, what it says to me the right alignment should it be both at 12 o'clock, and not face to face

Make sure that your at TDC on compression stroke and not exhaust stroke. If you have the valve cover off just have a look at the valve position on number 1 cylinder, both valves should be closed.

Nacho's right, Dots together is #6 Firing, both dots at 12:00 is # 1 firing.

Running mate cylinders are; 1&6, 8&5, 4&7, 3&2.
What it means is when #1 is firing @ TDC, it's "mate" #6 is also @ TDC but on Overlap portion of the Camshaft.
etc.
etc.
etc.

Aha! Thanks to the both of you then! 12 and 12 it is. Maybe I was thinking GM!  :brickwall:

yeah sorry, I must especify, stroke on cilinder 1, both at 12 o'clock. But, you know, mmmm, I still don't understand WHY books still state set points one against the other. As far I rmemeber my Haynes manual says that, and at the end they don't say thats the cilinder 6 compression, so everybody assumes is the #1 compresion time :shruggy: :shruggy:

I'm sure it'll be easier for me (and all) to see once I get everything together, then it should be apparent about the dots.

I really have no clue about what the books say, I've always just had the 6 and 12 thing in my head . . . :scratchchin:

Nacho-RT74

you can 6 and 12 on dots, as far mount dist rotor to explode at cilinder 6, and not 1 as EVERYBODY would set

Ahhh

So it's either 12 and 12 or 12 and 6 with my distributor turned 180* (to 6th cylinder). That makes sense if I'm getting it right. In that case, I may as well set it at 12 and 12, eh?
